I stared in awe as I saw the glistening field. The sun was shining bright and there was a fresh breeze that filled me with all the hope a six year old could have. It was a perfect day, the kind of day that would have made Picasso paint. In my situation, this day gave me confidence, I wanted to learn more about this rollercoaster ride of emotion by the name of baseball. The sign up, the practice, the boys, the fail.
I started grid kid football when I was in 7th grade and I am still playing until this very day. I used to play lots of running back and wide receiver and some corner. My coaches really liked me and it was my first year and I already took people that been playing longer than me postions. Then one game we played firth it was a good game.the score was 12-14 they were up. I was on the sidelines waiting for coach to put me in as wide receiver.
As I arrived at Jock Leighton Park, I started to have second thoughts. “Do I really have to do this?” , I asked my mom as we pulled into the parking lot. The lot was dim compared to the blinding, white lights on the lacrosse field. There were two giant, green fields that were side-by-side, with metal bleachers intersecting them.
When I was 7 years old I went to my first high school game with my mom, the teams that played were Roosevelt and Flower. I will never forget that day Sept 8th at 8PM friday night lights. My older cousin Brett Pierce was the starting Cornerback for flowers, I admired him because he the starting Corner and he was ranked #23 in the Nation for his position. My cousin ended the game with 18 tackles, 4 interceptions, and 3 forced fumbles that was one of the greatest days of my life. After the game was over I asked my mom could she sign me up to play football, she told me I wasn’t big enough.
On a cold, frosty, snow cover night in November at Welcome Home Stadium, was when my life changed. That night, two teams played for the chance to call themselves champions of 6th-grade football. All game, my team and I battled against the mighty Wilmington Hurricanes. We fought all game to win and finally we got the ball back with less than under a minute left and down by 4 points. The crowd was quieter than a church mouse as my coaches huddled us up during a timeout, and in that timeout, my coaches looked to me for answers.
Baseball has always been more than just a game. As John S. Bowman and Joel Zoss stated in The Pictorial History of Baseball “As part of the fabric of American culture, baseball is the common social ground between strangers, a world of possibility and chance, where ‘it’s never over till it’s over.’” It’s an American rich tradition in legends, folklore, and history. A never-ending story, where every game is a new nine inning chapter and every player has the chance to be a hero.
In the past, the face of baseball was scattered but pretty easy to find. We’ll start this in the ‘90s—because that’s when I was born, so yes I’m a millennial and like the bat-flip—but I’ll talk about that later. Let’s start in the ‘90s where baseball was quote, unquote reborn with Sammy Sosa and Mark McGwire hitting a homerun every other time they stepped to the plate.
The Day Moose Came to Town Erin Falls was never a sports town. We had baseball in the summer and an outdoor skating rink in winter; summers were hot and winters were cold. In 1912, Pumpkin Patch Park arose from a vacant lot at the north end of town. A makeshift baseball diamond first appeared in 1920 out of the dusty field that hadn’t seen moisture in decades. After gallons of water, bundles of fertilizer, and umpteen bags of grass seeds, it was transformed into a playable baseball field.
“I don 't want people losing respect for me as a player. I want to go out in every game and perform to the highest level. I have no retirement plans. I 've had a lot of injuries but I want to continue playing.”- Robbie Fowler.
Participating in high school soccer has taught me many life lessons, of which “determination” was the most important. At Fleetwood High School, soccer is a highly respected sport. As a freshman, I competed against many talented upper classmen for a spot on the team. Being one of the youngest players trying out was intimidating, but it forced me to establish a goal for myself. I was determined to, not only make the team, but to make the varsity team.
My friend and I went to the park and when we did we decided to play football. Down, Set, Hut I shouted as he ran for the ball and missed by a couple of inches because I over thru it. Lane “my friend” said “ ok let me be QB” one more try I said. Down, Set, Hut lane runs out for the ball and as he is running he tripped over a rock and hits his head on a bolder. As I pull out my phone to call 911 I don't hear lane breathing they pick up the phone and I say “Hi my friend tripped over a rock and is hit his head on a bolder
One time I came across failure. It all started when playing in a baseball game for Serra High School. Up to that game we had been undefeated in league play. As the game moved along it got more and more intense. Every batter and runner on base you could tell both teams were completely focused on winning that game.
My senior year started right after I landed here. My host father picked me up at the airport with two students from Hamilton who are my friends now. I had just arrived at my new house that we went to the Appreciation Day. I could have met a lot of people from Hamilton and especially the football team with whom I was going to play.
I was in a classroom with my soccer teammates waiting to be called in the announcements to get in the bus. We had become district, bi district, and area champions that year and we were on our way to play the regional final in Tyler, TX. When they called us up to board the bus we made our way to the front of the school where the bus was waiting for us. At our surprise the whole school was in the hallways cheering for us with posters that had our names and numbers on them and even with the school band leading us out. Cameras flashed, students cheered, and teachers clapped.
The first time on a football field and i was very hyped about it cause i got to play and the coach put me as starter because i was the biggest one on the field. The very first play we got sacked but are left lineman didn't stop the ball they got pushed over and we got sacked. The ball was on the 25 yard line and we were trying to get to the fifteen yard line to get the first down and we were short 10 yards but we could still get cause if we work hard you play hard.
