Personal Narrative: Compassion International

Even though I have never been to an extremely poor place, I have seen the devastating sights of people living in poverty. The reality that we often forget about is anywhere and everywhere in this world. I myself have participated in helping ones in need of other countries.
A few years ago, my youth group and I attended a youth conference in St. Louis, Missouri.. At this event, an organization called “Compassion International” set up booths with hundreds of pictures of boys and girls of various ages in various countries that are in need of help. “Compassion International” helps children living in poverty get a sponsor. The sponsor will send money to the child every month, along with any other donations.

I cannot recall her name, age, or where she is from, but it does not matter. That little girl is now able to have meals and get an education because of a simple donation every month. It is rewarding to know I helped make that possible.
Sitting in the Roland Fine Arts Center here at HLGU, my parents and I listened to the lead singer of Sidewalk Prophets, a Christian band, when we came to their concert a few years ago. My mom spoke about taking the opportunity to sponsor a child as a family. After just a tiny bit of consideration, we decided to do it.
The little boy’s name is Moise, and we still sponsor him to this day. We receive a picture of him in the mail, along with the occasional letter, handwritten by Moise himself. It makes my family and I feel really good about our decision to help someone in need.
Every Christmas my church participates in a program called “Operation Christmas Child”, which delivers shoeboxes full of gifts to many children around the world. Many of the congregation choose whether to buy for a girl or boy, or both, and what age group he, she, or they are in. Last year, my parents and I bought for both a boy and a girl, filling shoeboxes full of toys, school supplies, and other items.
It is amazing to watch videos of children receiving the boxes in the past years and to observe how excited they get. They are so thankful for even a tiny shoebox. Now that is the definition of a grateful
