Thompson lists the passionate traditions of many teams and writes, “I love ‘ARE YOU READY?’ and all the other SEC football idiosyncrasies, too, because they come from the same kind of passion…” Specific traditions are not southern college football special, it is the passion that drives these traditions that make it like a religion. Fans put so much of their heart and soul into cheering for these teams, and they are devoted, ready to defend them at any moment. Similarly, followers of religions often practice it in their everyday lives, and they are dedicated to following it.
I have involved with music since I was a child, however, the thought of architecture and acoustics never came to mind. When it came to high school I soon realized that there were certain designs and elements that each venue had, but never thought much of it. Until this class I never knew how much went into the design of certain architectural structures such as music venues, offices, apartments, etc. Each structure has certain design elements that make them individually pleasing to the people who interact with them. One place that I found to be interesting in regards to the acoustics in a public venue is my church back home in St. Louis, Missouri.
"This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you." John 15:12 I would like to tell you about a smaller, but lovely, sacred space close to my home, called the Knox United Church. It is a place in Calgary, Canada, where I live now, that is over 100 years old and known for its special features and peaceful attitudes of acceptance. It is a beautiful old church, a cornerstone of calm in our hectic downtown. The gentle looking, soft brown sandstone building rests serenely amongst the metal and glass of soaring modern high-rises, and is a beacon to the vulnerable in our harsh winters.
I believe that I am qualified for this scholarship because of how much I have grown at Wendell Baptist Church. It has helped me grow in my walk with God through missions and through serving. It has helped me appreciate the little things in life like the slides during services on sunday morning. Showing me that the little things like that do not just happen and some people put a lot of work into making them happen. Wendell Baptist Church has also shown me just how great my life is and how the problems I think I have are actually not that big of a deal in the long run.
Trinity Lutheran Church. Any day, any activity. I am a participant, a student, a leader, a pioneer. Sunday mornings are spent either worshipping with my family in Centennial Hall, a large gymnasium used for our contemporary services, or with other high schoolers, learning about life values and their connection to our faith. During this time, I listen.
As I walk through the doors hundreds of memories flood into my mind as the smell of yesterday’s incense hits my nose. In a way I grew up here from baptism, first communion, to confirmation. Various friends and family scattered in the pews nodding to you as you enter the church since in a small town everyone knows everyone. The church is large and ornate for where it is placed; a little town of roughly 200 people. The inside is magnificent with intricately carved wooden pillars and elaborate paintings of Bible stories on the dome ceiling.
I will not lie to you UNC Wilmington was not my first choice of schools, I was the kid who wanted to get out of the area and explore. My dreams originated elsewhere in big cities living in the fast lane and no turning back. I felt this way all of the way up until about two weeks ago, this was when I realized everything I want and or need in life is right here in Wilmington. Love also played a big factor in my decision to want to attend UNC Wilmington but a love much more than that of any significant other this love is for my school. I attend Heide Trask High School, it is very small and the athletics are very lack luster at best.
God and church activities have been a part of my weekly routine for as long as I can remember. If it is nine o’clock on a Sunday morning, I will definitely be in a church pew at Highland Baptist Church. My parents make sure that I understand the importance of going to church and trying to exemplify the spirit of Christ daily. I have been given the amazing opportunity to be raised on Godly morals in a strong Christian household. Because of this, God has always been the center of my life, or at least that is what I thought.
I’m not an orator, nor am I a scholar. Though I do enjoy a good debate and engaging in intellectual conversations ; I feel like I am never “good-enough”. I always seem to find myself comparing myself to others. Whether it’s my grades or appearance. I never feel worthy.
I was born In Laredo TX, on July 19,2001. And when I was born I started to attend Malakoff elementary here In Laredo ,TX. When I was In Kinder thru First. Then my parents did’t like the fact they would talk to me in Spanish so my parents took me out of that school.
It was an otherwise uneventful Saturday. My friend Brendan was supposed to watch football with me but his dad surprised him by taking him to the Michigan-Ohio State game instead. I turned on the television to see if I could catch a glimpse of them and was amazed at what I did see. The game had not even started and the crowd was full of palpable excitement, adorned in gold and blue. Fans, no matter what their age, were ecstatic to be there.
Before I discuss my experience at Grace Lutheran Church I feel it would be beneficial to explain my Church Background, so that you can better understand my outsider view of the Sunday morning worship Service I attended. I have been raised in the Baptist/Southern Baptist church my entire life. My parents are from South Carolina, which is also where I grew up, so our idea of Church has always been a small community with a very relaxed atmosphere. I stopped attending the Baptists church when I was 16. I chose to join Bent-tree Bible Fellowship, a non-denominational church.
Lebanon United Methodist Church Located in the small, rural town of Neeses, South Carolina, is the quaint little building known as Lebanon United by the members of the church. Consisting mostly of elderly couples, much like my personal church, this church was not too farfetched for me to enjoy. A lot of families fill up the pews on Sunday mornings’; one of those families being my son’s girlfriends. At least I know that my future in-laws are church going! I can personally say that I had never been to any church service other than my own and when my son invited me to join him and the family for service one Sunday, I was of course hesitant.
For my educator one-on-one assignment, I choose to interview Sara Dotty, who is my host teacher at Marcy Open School. When I was given this assignment, I started to think of who I could interview and I was thinking of my high school teachers. But then I started to think how I could connect more with the 3 grade students that I’m working with, and how I could get to know them better. So, I decided to interview Sara because I thought that if I get to know my host teacher better I will be able to connect with the students more.
Scattered thoughts, last minute ideas, zero organizational skills, and no set schedule summed up my lifestyle as a vacation bible school director. So the idea of stepping out of my comfort zone seemed appropriate for helping me and my family to grow in faith. I had been the vacation bible school director at our church for 5 years, and with the excellent team of leaders that I had, it was not a difficult task to host a week long vacation bible school for about 100 kids. Each leader was assigned a designated age group to prepare lessons, decorate class rooms, and assist with any other tasks that needed to be completed. “Many hands make light work” my preacher would say, and this statement held true year after year, as me and my team hosted multiple successful vacation bible schools for our church.
