It was a warm summer night; the crickets were chirping and the moon was shinning bright on the black pavement. My feet pounded on the pavement and my heart was beating fast as I ran down the street. On my left was my old friend McKenna panting as we ran. We were running from my cousin who was ‘it’ in our hide-and-seek tag game. As I ran, I noticed the pavement was older and there were a few spots where the gravel was loose. Sure enough I had just run into a bad patch and I felt my feet fly out from underneath me. There was a loud scrapping noise as I fell down. I had landed on my hands and my left knee. The first thought that flew into my mind, was my aunt’s words from earlier. She had strictly said, “No running around when it’s so dark like this. Especially not in the street.” But of course we didn’t listen and played our games anyway. My hands and knee had begun to burn as my friend ran up to me saying, “That was a wicked fall! Are you OK?” “I’m – I’m fine.” I said trying to stay strong. I hobbled over to my aunt’s driveway and looked at my leg under the porch light, where the mosquitoes and moths had all gathered. I looked down at my injured leg. My aunt said it is dead tissue, but I think it is there to resemble a rock and act as a reminder. Even though this was not anything tragic, I still learned something from this experience. I learned that you should listen to your elders and your parents because they do know what is best for you. My aunt was right to tell us not to play in the street at night because something much worse could have happened, like one of us getting hit by a car. After this experience I began to think more about what I am doing and if it is a smart thing to do. I did not make a huge mistake by running around in the dark, but you can still learn from even the smallest
