When I was seven, I was a cheerleader and my mom was my coach. Now I am thirteen and I still cheer, but instead for football I cheer competitively. The past two years I have been on the Kaneland Competitive squad and all two years our goal was to make it to the second day of the State. State is the final competition of the season, where you must qualify to participate. At state, all the qualified teams have a big competition and the top three go on to the next day. Last year was the closest we came to make it to the next day. When I arrived to the Sears Centre Arena in Hoffman Estates, IL, we checked in and went to my team. While she is turning to face us, she yells, “Now, get in your beginning formation so we can do a run through the whole routine, but remember we can’t do any stunts or tumbling because we don’t have the mats right now.” All of us quickly respond to what the coach instructed us to do, despite all the teams staring at us like we were aliens.
