As their children grow up, ideally parents want them to go to college. The four years of high school, the studying, the SAT and ACT are all part of getting prepared for college. Some students do not find it necessary to go and for some, college is the start of their career. The closer you get to high school graduation the closer you get to making your decision of what you want to do in life. Richard D. Kahlenberg, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation and the author of four books about education, goes into detail about 5 myths that are followed along with getting into college.
My primary goal for attending college is to be financially fit and also use the knowledge I’ve gained to help underprivileged youth achieve their goals. I come from a poor background where I have struggled to make ends meet. I didn’t receive any scholarships to attend college after high school so I skipped it. The cost of college is a burden that I couldn’t have taken. I used the motivation of when I took time away from school surrounded by people in situations I never wanted to be in.
College is an important and new experience for many people including myself. Coming into college I think a lot of people have small mindsets including myself towards what takes place. As Robert Frost said “we come to college to get over our little mindedness.” I agree with statement currently being a freshman in my first semester of college. College in general is a life changing experience that comes with a lot of life lessons.
I graduated back in 2013 from a pretty decent school district. During high school I wasn’t an A student or a B student, I just did what I needed in order to pass. Once I got to my junior of high school I started taking things more seriously, I started making A’s and B’s. Once my senior year started the pressure was on. Everyone asking “what college are you thinking about attending?”
The freshman myth has really opened my eyes, after all I myself am a freshman in college straight out of high school. The fact that 18 million students in a single year apply for college and 34% of those students drop or flunk out of college is a little scary. I have big goals for life I want to be either a Jag for the Army or a Prosecuting Attorney. The freshman myth is what I was thinking my senior year; piece of cake, easy, not going to have to work as hard as I have the last few years of my life. I learned quick that senior year is a lot more stressful then it sounds.
Most schools prepare students for college during middle school and high school, then again some wait until last minute and end up in a huge panic. Certain people are expected to go to college and some make the choice right away and some wait a year. Many go and some choose not to, but when it comes to college, it’s a huge topic in a senior’s life! We have to apply, write papers for scholarships, then cross our fingers and pray to get an acceptance letter or email, and pray we don’t see the words “denied” or “We’re sorry to inform you…”. As I said, not everyone goes to college but my sister decided to go because she wanted a better future for her and her son.
Making the transition from high school to college can be a very challenging and exciting progress. Many students start college with the mentality that college will just be a breeze like high school, but they’re in for a harsh reality. College is much harder and requires lots of self-motivation and concentration, two things that this generation severely lacks. However, it is not that this generation doesn’t care or doesn’t want to succeed. We just have a lot of obstacles and distractions in our lives.
Prior coming to college I was very nervous yet decently excited. I imagined college as being quite enjoyable yet also challenging. I looked forward to meeting new people, and in a sense "starting again". College for me was a time to restart and be who I really was. I expected it to be kind of rough, plenty of homework, cold, and very busy with a fraction of fun.
The first half of this semester was swift and I can’t believe how fast it passed by. College is a whole new world for me that I had never imagined with a lot of new experiences that I hope will shift me into a better and smarter person. There are more things I can do in college that I would have never dared to do in high school and I am happy for these new freedoms. I am able to eat in class, leave class without asking and they don’t care if I pay attention or not. My high school teachers would always tell me to wait for the bell, sometimes would not let me leave and if I did not pay attention they would yell.
Highschool are your original building blocks to prepare for what college will be like, for the most part. It’s a tremendous jump but in a way, nothing really changed at all. It all starts a little scary and nerve racking, but it takes some practice. Your freshman year in highschool is going to be a little similar to your freshman year in college. Sure you’re a little older
Do you remember what first day jitters were like? Day one of college was full of butterflies for me, because of the stress I experienced in taking the next step forward in life. I moved from high school to college through dual enrollment. The change provided many valuable lessons that would benefit my future. Everything began in my senior year when I took college classes while still enrolled in high school.
Just the thought of not knowing what I was supposed to do with the rest of my life made the last little bit of my senior year, very stressful. I then found out that not knowing and being undecided was perfectly okay and I was ready to begin my freshman year at Saint Petersburg College. Talking about graduating high school always seemed unrealistic because it was such a huge goal. After graduation, I had never felt so proud of myself.
In high school, many things tend to change right before your very eyes and it isn't slow and subtle, oh no it happens about as fast as the flash can run from one side of a football field to the other. Now many of these change aren't too bad or as bad as what is about to come. You end up with 6 classes instead of 3, puberty hits you or stops faster than you can say it, you have different teachers, Longer passing periods which isn't bad, and finally you get friends form different grades. There are many more changes to come but these I can name as just a freshman.

By the time you’ve finished high school, you’ve been a student for over 12 years, which means that you haven’t really experienced the real world yet. (Brower) Students aren’t ready for the academic side of college. You are expected to do more reading, write longer papers, and take longer finals. (Brower) College is expensive, and if you’re the one paying for it, starting right after high school may be difficult.
