Ms. Hughes stared at the board. She wondered if there was any point in her continuing her relentless journey. From coming from one of the poorest neighborhoods in the entire country, she had endured lots. She had to muster all of her willpower to keep going. Most of her neighbors, when they had the chance, instantly escaped their city to move to a more prosperous one, with more hope. However, her family never had any money. She never had any opportunities that were there for her. There were tens of thousands of occurrences when she was held at gunpoint. She lost practically all of her family to drugs or alcohol. Ms. Hughes, for the first time in a very long time, smiled. She had received near perfect grades. She got her credits. Last year, she had to retake some courses because of some special circumstances. This year, she would finally be done with community college. She had to deal with those same special circumstances this year, and still did an amazing job considering that this was also a completely new set of courses. Feeling happy that all of her hard work payed off, she returned to her one room, miniscule apartment that she was paying for rent, that she shared with three other people besides her son. She looked at her Langston, her small boy. She knew not if his father was in jail or alive. Pondering on the topic of how her son would have to struggle just as she did, she wondered if his experience may positively differ a bit. He was just about to start elementary school, and since the community was not great in any sense, she was not sure if he would be safe. However, the school district looked just a small amount better than hers, his home was slightly larger than his mother’s childhood house, and he certainly had more love from his parent than Ms. Hughes ever had from her parents. Ms. Hughes realized that after persevering through many of life’s obstacles, she had cleared a better pathway for her and her son than the one that her parents’ paved for her. But if you keep trying, if you aren’t going to allow other people to slow down your success, you will make it big.” Langston’s eyes widened. Ms. Hughes knew that he probably wouldn’t understand a thing she was saying at his age, and that what she was doing at this point was most likely pointless, but she cared not. “If you don’t allow obstacles to overcome you, slowly, and I assure you, things will get better. Your hard work will pay off. When I was a little child like you, I experienced some pretty bad situations, but I went on through them. Life for me ain’t been no crystal stair.
