It all started out as a normal day in Spencer, Iowa. I lived on an acreage out by the Spencer Middle School. When I woke up from a wonderful deep sleep, and I viewed the beautiful spring flowers and sun shining brightly through my large window. I overheard all of the birds singing loudly while they ate from the dangling bird feeder in my front yard. I loved to watch the news when I grew up, and as I watched, I heard that a big storm existed in the area. When I looked outside, I thought about how beautiful it looked and I did not know how there could possibly be a storm coming. The sun was shining luminously on this particular morning. We yelled, “Mom what do we do the tornado sirens just went off?”
“Go in the closet, hurry,” My mom said startled.
At my acreage, we did not own a basement because it happened to be an earth home. Part of the house was underground, and in this case, the walk-in closet and the bathroom in my parents bedroom existed underground. So I started panicking. My mom put a large and heavy mattress over our head for extra protection. While the storm existed, you could see the bright lightening crackling in the window. Almost every 10 seconds came another intrusive thunder rumble. The wind was howling it was picking up speed fast. I did not want the roof to fly off of my house, because then who knows what would happen.
The radio was on and all the sudden the people from KICD said, “ Take shelter now, a tornado was spotted touching down on 18th street.”
At that point, I saw my moms tears coming down her tan, soft skin. I realized that we lived about 2 miles away from 18th street and I did not know why she was crying so I asked my mom what was wrong.
She replied, “Just remember I love you girls no matter what
