My name is Rachel Anne Brockman, born the 28th of March, 1976. I am a proud mother of six beautiful boys and one stepson. I am forty years old, and working towards acquiring my High School Diploma, which I 've struggled with getting in the past, so I can further my career and begin my life the right way. I 'm a pretty stubborn and independent person, loved by all, and hated by most. My interests are music, and singing, as it runs in my family.
I’am the fourth child on my mother’s side and the second on my father’s side. I have a two sisters and three brothers. Conversely, My position in my family is the caretaker. Consequently, being the caretaker in my family, I find myself carrying the bulk of my family emotional stress. I identify as African-American female.
The diversity that may be found all around the world and in our very community has always fascinated me. I am aware that it is a widely held belief that being a minority is considered a disadvantage in various aspects and I would disagree with this. Diversity and culture is a two-way street- as a community, whether that be society as a whole or simply a freshman class, we have the potential to be able to learn from each other. I believe that my status as an underrepresented minority has shaped me into the person I am today. Despite moving to the United States at a young age and being a first-generation college student , I am grateful for the privilege to be able to further my education at the University of Utah.
In the past I have struggled with my biracial identity. As a child I was confused about which community I belonged in because I am a mix of Navajo and Caucasian. As I got older, I began to question myself and who I was. I felt like I did not belong to either the Native or Caucasian community because in both groups I felt like someone else. I felt as if I had to live two lives that were completely separated.
Growing up in a family where my mom was a doctor and my dad was a musician, I was exposed to a lots of things in my life. For example I was able to see Broadway plays and and go on family trips to Disney every year in the winter. A lot of people would say I was very fortunate to be one of the family where I knew both my parents and they did there best to give me a lot of life experiences. But me being an African-American male it seems like I not supposed to how do experiences, I was supposed to not know my father not to be able to go on these trips with my family.
My childhood was bound with questions of why. Why can 't I stay out late? Why can 't I wear that?
Unknown Hi i’m Bella. I look like a happy go lucky African american woman. Well to all that say that they only got one part right in that whole statement. I’m an average african american woman. I have nothing and no one to truly call my own.
Challenges are events that are used to change you for the better should you choose it accept it. The challenges I have faced wasn’t a matter of choice but of something that I have no control over. Some people will tell you it’s a burden, some say it’s an entitlement or free ride. Science says it’s just having a high amount of melatonin due to geographical location for survival. To me though, being black probably one of the biggest challenges a human can have in America at least I find it terribly perplexing.
I identify as a Latina. I have always considered myself as a Latina, but throughout time, I believe that I have assimilated more into a white individual because of the privilege that I hold and because I have lived in the US most of my life. I have received mostly negative messages from those who are not from my ethnicity. My peers and I were told we wouldn’t graduate high school and be laborers for the rest of our lives. With the current politics, I believe that this still holds true where some people still hold stereotypes and give oppressing messages to Latinos.
I have blond hair and pale skin. On the color wheel, my father is a rich mocha, my sister is a warm copper, and my mother is a perfectly tanned caramel; I am somewhere between cream and eggshell on the opposite end of the spectrum. Being stereotypically white can be difficult when you’re African American. The beginning of high school was when I first began to feel that my fair complexion hid my true identity.
Since the ripe age of twelve years old, I have been attending one of the best kept secrets of the Shenandoah Valley; Camp Strawderman. The ideals Strawderman implements are to make girls so happy they will share their happiness with others, to create friendships that shall last through life, and to bring out the hidden possibilities that lie within each girl. Helping girls to find themselves is a big aspect of both my time as a camper and as a counselor in training, called “T.A.”. I grew a deep love for helping other girls who had stumbled upon Strawderman to gain as much as they could out of their stay. As an older girl, all you can hope for is that you have made someone else’s stay just as wonderful as yours your first year at camp.
Growing up there were many time where things would happen but I was too young to realize it or even know what was happening. As time went passed thing got better and less noticeable but that is when things normally take a turn for the worse. But most people when looking at me would say he is African American but in reality yes I am partly African American
The negative treatment and pain I received as a black girl, and still into my adulthood, it amazes me how I'm still standing tall and strong. It amazes me how people have tried to break me, even my own kind, but I'm still here. Truth is I gotta to have thick skin and protect myself, because I got no choice. If I don't... who will? And that is the everyday life of living as a black woman.
Heaved I ever experience racism? How did it make me feel? Yes, I have experience racism. It was not the best feeling ever it made me feel like crap. It’s funny how people make you feel if you’re a different race.
The world is filled with people, and like snowflakes, each person is not the same as another. Each person identifies with different aspects of their lives to create their own personal identities. I personally identify with my Italian side of my family to help form who I am today. I have found myself connecting with this side more so than the other parts of my identity. It affects how I live my life by becoming the center to the culture surrounding me.
