Odysseus the Brave Hero In Homer's “The Odyssey”, the protagonist, Odysseus is fighting in the 10 year war against Troy. They win the war and now he and his men are trying to get back to their home, Ithaca. He angers the god of the sea, Poseidon, and now he has a god as an enemy. Poseidon sends waves after waves blowing him and his crew to islands, each having a conflict like monsters and goddesses.

Poseidon liked to claim coastal cities as his own since he was god of the sea. Once, Poseidon and Athena went head to head over ownership of a city which would later be named after the victor. The story goes that Athena and Poseidon held a contest to see which one would be able to control the beautiful coastal city. Poseidon raised his hand and made a stream. When the people drank from the stream it turned out to be saltwater, not freshwater.

Odysseus, showcases two important characteristics of a hero in The Odyssey: grand events affecting him, and bravery. Because of the amount of disrespect towards the gods, Poseidon got revenge by making his journey very tiring and difficult, by sending storms, winds, monsters, etc. Poseidon’s anger is one of the main reasons why Odysseus’ journey took such a lengthy time. The impact of Odysseus’ actions led him to pleading for help from the gods: “I have escaped the salt sea and Poseidon. Even the deathless gods respect a man who is as lost as I am right now” (5.446-449). After Poseidon had sent the monsters and deadly winds, Odysseus had come to realize how much respect means to the gods.
His symbols are the trident, fish, dolphin, earthquakes, horse, and bull (“Poseidon”). Poseidon’s trident is a three-pronged spear that can create waves, foam,tsunamis, and can calm the sea. However, Zeus saw the two sides of the gods’ feelings towards Odysseus. “‘Great Odysseus/ who excels all men in wisdom... it’s the Earth-Shaker, Poseidon, unappeased,/ forever fuming against him..’” (1.78-83). Zeus created an equilibrium so that Poseidon could take out his anger on Odysseus through punishment, and Athena receives the duty of making sure Odysseus gets home to Ithaca.
Should destiny intend he shall see his roof again among his family in his fatherland, far be that day, and dark the years between. Let him lose all companions, and return under strange sail to bitter days at home.’ In these words he prayed, and the god heard him” (161, 176-186). Polyphemus prayed that Odysseus would have a hard voyage home, and his father heard his request and went through with it. This shows that Poseidon loves Polyphemus and cares for him; he is avenging
Throughout his voyage, Poseidon delayed him of returning home by providing strong storm on the sea which caused the ship to destroy. Poseidon did not only delay his homecoming, but made him face different dangers and also saved him from the Trojan war. Zeus was the king of the gods who intervenes in dispute between gods and also men. He also has the power to make other gods do what he pleases. In his role in odyssey, he sent Hermes to order calypso to release Odysseus to return to Ithaca.
