I was able to shadow Dr. Bohman on several occasions and witness a multitude of procedures. anesthesia is an interesting field, half the time you’re checking on patients, giving nerve blocks, and the other half you’re watching a monitor and checking vitals; add to it the on-call hours and you’ve got a job that requires a lot of dedication. The only downside at least from the perspective of an observer is that often you do not get to see what’s going on because the of the sheet they pin up.

I always knew that I wanted to work in the field of criminal sciences. However, I wasn’t sure I had the stomach to be a coroner. Someone recommended I watch the show Bones on FOX, and I was instantly hooked. Dr. Temperance Brennan is a forensic anthropologist at the Jeffersonian Institute, and I knew as soon as I finished the first episode that I wanted to be a forensic anthropologist. While Brennan is a fictional character, she is based on books written by Dr. Kathy Reichs.
Dr. Edward Kammerer, MD is a good family friend. We have been friends for more than 17 years! When he heard I had a goal of job shadowing an internal medicine physician to see if that is the path I want to take, he kindly offered a day when I could follow him around and see what his typical work day is like. I met him at 8:00 a.m. on a Friday. When the day first began he had some paperwork to fill out and catch up on.
If I had to choose one activity to pursue, I would go with activity number one: assistant at Drake Dental. I would choose this one primary because it involves helping others. “We rise by lifting others” is a quote that resonates with me as I believe strongly in its message. My job, while it may be insignificant compared to others around the office, involves helping others by making sure everything runs smoothly. Whether it be scheduling an appointment, or simply greeting the patient as they walk in, my job is to ensure that the patient feels satisfied with their dental experience.
I feel grateful for the guidance and friendship that my advisors at Park have given me. While there are many things I hope my next advisor learns about me, and there are two important things I would like my Dana Hall advisor to know about me. Over the summer I attended the four day Congress of Future Medical Leaders and it made me realize what I dreamed to become and achieve in life Before the school year of 2017 ended I came home and found a large black envelope on the entrance table, in gold lettering it read “Harvard”. I quickly rushed over to my mom and started frantically waving the sealed envelope in her face, she started yelling for me to open it. It is necessary to understand the background and the motives for the Stolpersteine to further assess various perspectives and attitudes towards this tremendously large monument. It has provoked diverse reactions through the highly sensitive and emotional topic of the atrocities happened in the German history. To analyse the different opinions, we will look at multiple German newspaper articles to gain insights about the feelings of the parties concerned. My experiences shadowing with several physicians have given me an insight to the difficult but yet rewarding career medicine has to offer. One of my shadowing experiences that stood out the most to me was when I shadowed at Emory University Hospital. As undergraduate student, I had the opportunity to shadow for a team of neuropathologist led by Dr. Brat. While shadowing for Dr. Brat, we received a patients tissue and the team of pathologist (including myself) determined that this patient had glioblastoma. We had so many patient cases to sign out that I didn’t think too much about the diagnosis.
For my Diverse Field Experience this semester, I spent fifteen hours at the Mclean County Juvenile Detention Center. This particular center was occupied by about 8-14 juveniles at a time, all depending on court dates and occupancy of other nearby detention centers. This center usually had 3 staff members working the shift every time I went, which was seven to nine on weekday afternoons. I was intrigued to go to at this time because I thought it would be the time of the day were the juveniles had no school work or other obligations to do while I was there. I wanted to see what they liked to do in the free time before bed, the only stipulation being mandatory snack time at eight pm.
I am David Myles Thompson, I and take much pride in my first and middle just as much as my last name. My mother always tells me that “It’s important to never look like what you’ve been through,” you smile at the world and it’ll smile back, cry at the world and you’ll cry alone. And I believe that the circumstances that I had been victim to have made me who I am today and ultimately paved the road for the future. That road, which is my destiny- what I make it up to be and these are the goals that I have for myself, academic/career/ and life goals.
Shadowing was a great opportunity for me. It provides students a general overview about a certain career such as working conditions and nature of work. On the 14th of November, I shadowed Dr. Azhar Bustami, a dentist on 10043 E Adamo Dr, Tampa, FL 33619. Dr. Azhar was very welcoming and supportive. She tried her best with explaining the advantages and disadvantages of working as a dentist.
Since graduating, however, I have been fortunate enough to establish a multi-year shadowing opportunity with an ER physician. This experience has easily been one of my most meaningful exposures to the medical field. Unlike other specialists I've observed, whose practices focus on a narrow branch of medicine, shadowing in the ER has allowed me to familiarize myself with pathologies affecting all body systems. Furthermore, having frequent shifts in the ER, I've been able to transition from a passive observer to an active contributor; I now recognize how certain ailments present, and can intelligently discuss possible diagnoses with my mentoring physician. This experience has enabled me to learn about the human body instead of just the specialty itself.
