I spend roughly sixteen hours per week in my vehicle commuting to and from my job. Eleven of hours are spent driving home and then back on the weekend. I work as a crane operator and to stay employed, you have to go where the work is. Currently for me, the work is over 300 miles east of my home in southeast South Dakota to the northeast of St. Paul, Minnesota along the Wisconsin border. It's safe to say that I am an expert windshield warrior rivaled only by the truckers that make a living driving. I've made similar commutes to other job sites over the years in my profession because there isn't always a job close to home. Make your vehicle as pleasant a space as possible. Cleaning up vehicle is best if you're spending a lot of time in it. I don't spend a lot of time cleaning my vehicle when I'm home on the weekends but I do empty the trash bag I keep, which is only plastic a grocery bag hung from the ashtray, and I'll go wash and vacuum it. All that takes about thirty minutes each Saturday. I use a variety of air fresheners to keep it smelling nice and fabric sprays to clean the seats. This may seem unnecessary but I believe the difference between a clean, pleasant smelling car and one that has a couple weeks’ worth of McDonald's wrappers, empty coffee cups and smells like body order can really have an effect on your …show more content…

Sitting properly can help you to avoid future discomfort. I recently had an issue with pain in my right shoulder and some numbness in my right hand and fingers. Between the doctor and the physical therapist we were able to determine that it was caused by a tightened muscle in my shoulder which was at least partially caused by how I was sitting when I drove. I liked to recline and lean slightly when I'm driving. I've since had to bring my seat to a more upright position, actually using my headrest and began using the lumbar support to help maintain proper posture.
