Life has changed drastically for everyone after War World I. The life style of German has now gone down into the dirt, except for a few very rich people. People are starting to get scared because the shortage of food. People want someone to blame for the the lifestyle change and for the shortage of food. Christopher Isherwood takes us through Berlin just as the Nazis are coming to power. Instead of being told about the changes for the mass of society, Isherwood tells it from the point of the marginalized side of society. Living arrangements were almost like living in college. No one got their own room. The whole point of living arrangements were to maximize occupancy. We are told many stories from Frl. Schroeder about how she would smack the man that suggest she be cleaning her own floors . We are told how she use to have her own room, but now she sleeps in the living room. We are also told how she use to be very picky of those she allowed to rent. In this particular part, we learn that times are getting tough for money. Frl. Schroeder points out “In those days I could afford to be very particular about the sort of people who came to live here” . So we know that it use to be that people coming to live together was normal. We first meet her when Isherwood is out for coffee. We learn right away that she likes to sleep around hoping to find someone with money that will one day make her a famous actor. This is not the first time that we come across a woman that sleeps with men for the thought of money. Sally is not a prostitute. She is simply a nineteen year old that needs money and wants to become famous . Sally is very open about sleeping around. People are fine with women doing this now in Berlin. It is because people are desperate for money. Sally is also desperate for hope that she will get out of Berlin and become a famous
