Personal Narrative: Medical Marijuana

My sophomore year of high school I started getting terrible migraines with auras. It would start with me getting really dizzy, I’d hear a crazy ringing in my ears, and then the migraine would hit. Once the pain started right behind my eyes I would start to see white spots all throughout my vision, making it impossible to focus in school or even drive home, even though I lived only a couple blocks down the road. The pain was so intense at times that it would actually make me throw up too. I do not like taking pills even if they’re prescribed to me, I didn’t swallow my first pill until I was about fourteen. Sativa is the strain I use medicinally; it keeps me high in energy but also relieves most or all of my symptoms from migraines. Indica is more appropriately used in people who have sleeping disorders because it can make you relaxed and drowsy. Indica is mainly the strain used recreationally. When I walk into a medical marijuana dispensary, I tell the clerk that I have chronic migraines and they help me find the best strain to relieve my symptoms while being able to go on with my day. There are very few negative side effects from marijuana, like minor throat irritation. I’m not telling people to break the law and smoke weed, but I would prefer to see one of my friends be a ‘pothead’ than an alcoholic or a heroin addict. Being a college student, I see people drink all the time. Personally I do not like the effects of alcohol. People make irresponsible decisions and act carelessly. I also don’t think it’s fun to be incapable of walking or talking correctly. Many people suffer from addiction to alcohol which is a terrible disease to even be around, since it affects everyone around that person. Marijuana can even be used to help someone stop drinking alcohol, making the withdrawals more bearable and to keep their mind off the urge to drink. Recreational marijuana use is illegal and I can see why, many people misuse marijuana. I believe that in this day and age, medical marijuana shouldn’t be frowned upon as much when there has been a lot of research into the medical purposes behind it. Police offers seem to go out of their way to bust young kids using marijuana when they should be focused on people committing real crimes, especially around Saginaw where the crime rate seems to keep
