Personal Narrative: My Dad's Aphorism

In my younger and more tender years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since. He ingrained in me the saying, “What you do not ask for you do not get.” He has repeated this statement repeatedly but we’ve always been unusually distant in the sense that he and I understood that I would have to be captain of the ship that is my life. As a young boy I was naturally reserved and did not like taking risks. Throughout my childhood I tried to integrate my Dad’s aphorism into my life. I strove to find the balance between taking just enough calculated risk to get by, while remaining in my comfort zone. International Kuo Shu Championship Tournament in Maryland, apply for the Chinese American Political Association and learn about the democratic process by interning this summer for Contra Costa District Attorney Mark Peterson, go to the inaugural opening of the the Boy Scouts of America National High Adventure Base, Bechtel Summit in West Virginia, to become the founder and president of the Las Lomas Nutrition Club, and meet my cousins from Hawaii for the first time and celebrate with them the life of my Grandmother who lost her battle with cancer this July. The average mind is quick to associate shyness with unwillingness to come out of your comfort zone, and so it came about that in High School, because I had changed so drastically I was unjustly accused of being a different person, because now I am not content with the bare minimum.
