English Writing Progress
Introduction:
Below you will find my progress throughout my English 110 class. There are four learning outcomes that reflects how I have progressed in these different areas. Lastly, there is a creative revision on one of the assignments we completed in class, along with a reflection on the creative revision.
Writing as a Social Act
In our SWA and MWA#2, we were asked to pick a discourse community of any style of dance we learned in our freshman learning community, Dance Appreciation class. We started off with a literacy narrative which is written in own perspective with our experience with reading and writing. This style helps the writer to share their personal story that he/she has experience. This style used first person perspective using I, me and myself. For example, “I” could not read until the age of six. First person style is used to share personal stories among varieties of audience. Then, we moved on to creating weebly website. The purpose of this medium was to educate people about my discourse community of hip hop dance. I want them to know about the basics of hip hop history, culture and language. The general tone of this medium was casual to reach out anyone interested in learning about hip hop. The website is very visual with pictures and videos making it easy for anyone trying to learn about hip hop dance and its roots. Walking into the English 110 class, I was not sure about how to write in these different genres. Even more, I lacked the important of writing for different audiences. When we write in these styles we need to know who our audiences are and depending on the audience the writer has to change his tone of voice. For example, when writing our SWA#3, observational report we should not include sensory details or create comparison. It should be facts and details that highlights the content. For me, I had to write about a clip from a movie. We wrote about the production, style, audience and the overall story of the clip. Towards the end of the semester we also created an infographic advertisement which are short and catches the audience attention. It also has to be very visual because people would not be staying long to read it when its posted on a billboard or walls. Overall, I now understand the value of genres and
