For my no voice experience, I went to different stores throughout the day. I visited Wal-Mart, The Dollar Store, McDonalds, Wal-Greens, and Kroger. The most interesting experience was when I went to Wal-Green pharmacy and Kroger. At Wal-Greens, two women helped me. I asked for medicine to treat stomach problems. The first woman seemed shocked and hurried to get me asheet of paper and pen. Since she thought I could not hear she told the lady “Holly, she can’t talk!” Another lady came to help me. You could tell she was more experienced with people who had hearing problems. She did not know sign language but she did understand what I was asking for. She acted in a much more professional manner. She was able to get me what I needed. My experience at Kroger took me by surprise. I had taken my grocery list to a Kroger worker. When getting a bag of chips a woman came up to me signing. This took me by a shock because I did not know she was watching. I was able to sign some things to her but not much. She asked me my name and vice versa. She also asked me how I was doing. I do not believe they knew I was pretending based on their shocked reactions. I did not reveal it to them in the end either. However, my sister was with me so they have noticed her staring and smiling. Other people were looking but did not seem surprised. Overall, I believe I was treated decently. Overall, I feel this experiment was great. I think future students learning ASL should try to do this. Not many people understand what daily life is for those who are Deaf. I learned how people have little experience dealing with those with hearing issues. This should be changed. So many employers are worried about people being bilanguage in Spanish. Not many employers’ are concerned on people being fluent in ASL. Through taking this class I learned ASL is equally important as other
