Personal Narrative: My Experience At The Deaf Classroom
The school argued that signing would become a “crutch” and limit a child’s ability to speak and interact with the hearing world (31). While Tressa viewed this as a positive program at the time, she later discovered the importance of sign and how it allowed Alandra to communicate to the fullest extent. It speaks about Thomas Hopkins Gallaudet and Laurent Clerc the creators of the first school for the deaf, also deaf clubs, and people today who have changed perspectives of the deaf community. Being represented by someone who doesn’t understand your life or your struggles is frustrating. It was especially frustrating for the students and faculty of Gallaudet University when the board selected yet another hearing president of the university. Gallaudet is a university known for educating and growing students who are Deaf or hard of hearing. It has been this way for 150 years. In the video Deaf President Now, both the sides of the Board of Trustees and the American Deaf Community were discussed from the protest after the selection in 1988.
As outlined by DF Armstrong in Sign Language Studies, the movement helped to bring a new level of visibility to the Deaf community, and was the first time that Deaf people had asserted their rights in a powerful and unified way (Armstrong, 2014). The movement was successful in that it brought about the election of the first Deaf president of Gallaudet University, and it was also an important sign of progress in that it demonstrated the power of Deaf people working together to bring about change. It also brought attention to the need for greater representation of Deaf people in higher education and other areas of society. The topic that really caught my attention was the increase the deaf education through the centuries. The deaf education made its debut in the early 1800’s. When watching this documentary I kept in mind that deaf people are normal. They are not handicapped nor helpless. The increase of educational opportunities through the centuries for the deaf community are truly outstanding.
Michelle Fletter had established the Deaf Coffee Chat at Stackbucks on March of 2010. The event is about people socializing and meeting new people by using sign languages. The event is a great way for hearing people who are learning sign language to better their skills to become good with the language. I am very grateful that my professor recommended me to the Deaf Coffee Chat because I would never have met wonderful people at the event.
While reading Deaf Again, I couldn’t help from thinking, how I would have treated Mark through elementary school and high school. I was amazed when he said that he was so used to reading people’s lips and didn’t even notice he was deaf. I know that when I try to read people’s lips without hearing their voice it is very hard. It’s crazy how we take advantage of sound in our everyday lives as human beings. I know that I could not imagine not having the ability to hear sounds of the world.
Many years later my aunt first child a girl was born deaf, but the family really did not know she was deaf until the baby was two years. Twelve years later, due to family problems, my mom ended up temporary custody. While my cousin was in my care, I had no idea what the Deaf Culture consist of, how many problems, confusion and conflict these individuals go through just because of their deafness. I focus on Black Deaf Americans because they are faced with two obstacles: 1: being Black Americans and the historically oppressions that the majority of them had gone through for generations and still are going through; 2: being Deaf in a hearing world. These individuals faced twice as much prejudices, discrimination, and stereotyped as “Deaf and Dumb.”
After this event I felt like I got a little taste of what Mark had experienced in the book Deaf Again, but the roles were switched I was hearing in an all deaf environment instead of being deaf in a hearing environment like mark was. Although this type of event could have scared me away from future deaf events it didn’t. The reason why I am looking forward to events like this in the future is because I’m going to persevere and improve so next time ill understand a little more and sooner or later ill understand everything that’s going on. Knowing how bad my ASL is makes me just want to get better. Therefore, there are many things I could improve onto make my future experiences better and I’m looking forward to the next
I was diagnosed with dyslexia during my 10th grade as I was slow in learning and writing. I was provided with accommodations for my 10th and 12th grade Board examination by the Central Board of Secondary Education. However, I did not use accommodations during my undergraduate study in MBBS and I had progressively improved in my scores and writing speed with the help of peers and teaching faculty and my own perseverance. With how far I have progressed scholastically, I strongly believe I can independently perform tasks without any aid.
With this experience, it had allowed me the space to utilize the skills that I have to acquire through my educational program while attending QCC. I have found this experience to be rewarding which gave me great insight into my future of being a Sign Language Interpreter. By me working side by side with members of the Deaf community, it has shown me …. And with this I have a better understanding what it means to be a sign language interpreter. Therefore, my hope is that by me being accepted to your program I can further learn more about the community and the different ways in which I can be helpful towards members within the Deaf community.
You always used to think that there were monsters in your closet or under your bed when growing up. Your parents told you that there was no such thing as monsters, and that there was nothing to be scared of. But sadly, there are monsters among us. They are just hiding behind the mask of everyday people. These monsters are serial killers.
Prior to reading these chapters I wasn’t really sure what to expect. I have never really been exposed to the Deaf- World. I have watched shows such as Switched at Birth, but I know that it doesn’t completely portray the real Deaf- Community. I was extremely interested in seeing their side of the story and gaining insight on the life they live. I decided to read chapters one, and two.
