I have learned many life lessons while playing sports, whether it is showing me how hard you have to work to get where you want to be or learning to overcome adversity. Growing up, I watched my older brother excel in sports and in the classroom. I used him as an inspiration to work hard in basketball and volleyball. Sports have shaped characteristics in me such as leadership, teamwork, and sportsmanship. I have used these characteristics on the court and in the community. When I think of leadership, I think of a person who leads their teammates in a positive way and leading by example in the community. I have learned this throughout my experiences in athletics. My freshman year I was on a varsity basketball team that did not win a conference game, and it was pretty obvious there was no team chemistry. Ever since then, we have improved each year. In sports, every player has roles in the team's overall success, whether it is the best player on the team or the last player on the bench. My freshman year of varsity volleyball, I was that last player on the bench. Although I did not enjoy being in this position, I knew my role on the team and I helped my teammates get better every day in practice. That is what teamwork is. My junior and senior years were much different. My junior year, I played the outside hitter position; then my senior year, I moved to libero, which is not a position I was very interested in playing but I knew it was best for the team. This year, we went into the third round of playoffs, which is farthest we have gone in ten years.
