In Refiguring Aztlan, Rafael Perez-Torres explains the significance of Aztlan. Aztlan served many purposes to the Chicano community, but it was mainly utilized as a metaphor for unity and liberation. According to El Plan Espirtual de Aztlan, Aztlan serves as the homeland for Chicanx and influenced the cultural, political, and social behavior of the Chicanx people. By claiming Aztlan as their homeland, Chicanx were able to gain a sense of identity. The varying interpretations of Aztlan built tension within the community.
Tenochtitlán was the capital city of the Aztec civilization. It was founded in AD 1325 by the Mexica people. This city was built on a cluster of small natural islands on Lake Texcoco in the Valley of Mexico. The small island was gradually enlarged as Tenochtitlán grew. It became one of the largest and most powerful cities in Mesoamerica.
Tenochtitlan The city of Tenochtitlan was built on a lake. It was surrounded by mountains and was also near an active volcano. But this is not what forced them to create their enormous city on a lake. What influenced them was a priest who had a dream and told them to travel and search for a pear cactus with an eagle on it.
Never have I taken my culture into consideration, but I would more than likely classify my culture as Latino/Hispanic. For starters, I was born in a lovely place called Chihuahua, Mexico. This place is the reason I consider myself a Latino. Why is this my culture you ask? My whole daily lifestyle revolves around this Hispanic heritage.
Daily Life in Tenochtitlan The Aztec history is a rich one that spans from 1325 to 1521. The Aztec daily life was extremely organized and that was evident in their work and how they ran the Empire they built. Mostly, Aztecs are known for their family life, markets, religion and their complex history with Spain. The Aztecs are one of the most popular and important topics we learn about today as their ideas and traditions are the foundation upon which current civilization was formed.
The Aztecs lived from the 14th to the 16th centuries in Tenochtitlan now known as Mexico City. The legend states that in the 1323 the Aztecs saw a vision of an eagle perched atop a cactus eating a snake. That was a sign to make that land their land and so they did and named it Tenochtitlan. The children had to attend school even slave children. The education taught them warfare, history, religion, citizenship and work skills.
Ever since the railroad expansion came to the Southwest, it gave easy access to many people, including attraction of new businesses. Santa Fe came in 1877, and turn northeastern part of New Mexico in a modern paradise, by attracting settlers, miners and ranchers (Lamar, 153). By 1880, Santa Fe joined Southern Pacific railroad, therefore several towns and property values went up. The cattle business expanded dramatically and more than fifty charter banks went up ever since the Santa Fe railroad was built (Lamar, 154). The Sonoran railroad completed in 1882, paved the way for new beginning for southern Arizona, due to mostly being isolated from other states.
El Paso and Ciudad Juarez lie side by side, but are separated by the Rio Grande. The border’s way of life relies on the dividing line. As a resident of Ciudad Juarez, I experience a blend of cultures on an everyday basis. However, in 2010 the unique culture of the city was darkened by the shedding violence in Ciudad Juarez. Ciudad Juarez came to be known as the deadliest city in the world.
I was born in Colombia, South America and lived there until I turned seven. Before I moved to the states, I attended a public school and was on the competitive swim team for my school. I earned many awards the year and a half I swam for my school. I took pride in competing with girls three to four years older than me. I also remember how different things were there than they are here in the states.
My grandfather asked me “Which one?” I respond “Let’s get this one”. Little did I know that guinea pig was my dinner. Guinea pigs or cuy are not pets but food in Ecuador. When I arrived at the airport it looked like any typical airport, but it felt as if I was in a different world.
Morality of the Atomic Bomb on Hiroshima The atomic bomb was the cause for the end of World War II. In the year 1939, scientist Albert Einstein started working on the Uranium bomb and not even 10 years later, this deadly weapon was dropped on Hiroshima in Japan killing 80,000 people, but also ending the war. Immediately after the bomb dropped, people took sides on the morality of this event. While some people think Americans were wrong in dropping ‘Little Boy’, others think this was good because it saved many US soldiers, showed our perseverance in winning the war, and was the best solution to get the Japanese to surrender considering how terrible the conditions were.
Growing up, I would always shrug off the fact that I was of Hispanic origin- It did not appear as something important considering that I came from a Latino community. Like many immigrants, I was Americanized and this meant that there was a disconnection from my homeland. I was unknowing of the significance of pride many Latinos held in order to have a sense of loyalty towards their country.

Growing up as a first-generation Mexican American was a huge advantage for me in that it allowed me to grow up in a culturally diverse community. I learned how to work well with people of all backgrounds and empathize with people from all walks of life. However, while being the first in my family to go to college was a momentous accomplishment, the lack of instruction and guidance lead me to commit many mistakes that could have been easily avoided during my first years at college. My timidity and downright arrogance lead me to believe that I did not need anyone’s assistance and thus I found myself denial that there was a problem in terms of my grades during my first semesters. I have since addressed this issue and have worked diligently to
I believe the term, hispanic, itself does not define who I am. I define who I am and who I want to become. However, I do come from a Mexican heritage. Coming from a Mexican heritage has influenced and deeply impacted my life. My heritage has taught me a lot.
