The first leadership role I would like to mention is my role as an assistant teacher/helper during the summer at our local Boys and Girls Club. The next leadership role I would like to mention is my role as a VBS teacher at my church in Starkville, Ms. I would like to be able to acquire more leadership roles and such in the future to further my leadership horizon. ~What Being a Leader Means to Me~ There are some key things that make a leader a leader to me. The first one is not panicking in the presence of mistake or failure. The second thing is a strong sense of courage and willingness to lead with pride.
It was the last inning in our all-star game, and we were losing 10 to 8. Our team had 2 outs and we couldn’t get the third. Our pitcher was doing bad, throwing all balls, while all of us in the field were tired, ready to fall asleep at any moment. There goes another walk. They score again.
I love to learn about history and other countries in World Studies. Above all I love to learn more about Jesus, God, the Holy Spirit, and the Bible through Christian Studies. One leadership experience I had was through my athletics at my high school. Every year, our high school volleyball program hosts a camp for young girls to come learn and develop her volleyball skills, as well as do arts and crafts and make new friends. As a varsity player, we all were assigned a different group of girls to be in charge of. We also were given a junior varsity player to help us. I became a leader in this area because I was more experinced and organized.
This definition of Leadership is best restated by my very own father “A person can demonstrate leadership skills even when not in a leadership position.” Throughout my high school years so far, I have demonstrated leadership mostly in the field of Boy Scouting in two different Troops. I started out my leadership trail in Boy Scouting by becoming a Troop Scribe who as per se the Boy Scout Handbook, 2016 Edition “The Scribe attends and keeps a log of patrol leaders’ council meetings. He records attendance and dues payments of all troop members and records advancement in troop records and on the troop advancement chart.” After that, I ascended into becoming a Patrol Leader and then acting as a Senior Patrol Leader, the highest youth leader of the troop, handling all patrols’ affairs and coordinating with the Scoutmaster for advice and consent.
For this outcome I have two projects that I believe fit the points in a good way. Both of the projects I had to work in a group and be able to clearly and effectively get my ideas out as well as understand the others thoughts and ideas. These projects both involve working well in a team setting and being able to get to the common goal and being able to work well with one another. The two projects I have picked are my group Archetype project and then the group or class discussion.
Being a fairly shy person, it can be difficult to step out of my comfort zone and lead, but I like to think that I am a valuable leader when I step up. In middle school, I have had a great deal more leadership opportunities than in high school as I am only a sophomore, but I am actively seeking leadership roles in the classroom and activities I participate in. Holding a position as a club officer for Cub Club throughout my 7th and 8th grade years has taught me a great deal about what it means to truly be a leader. Leadership requires responsibility, commitment to doing the best you can for your community and the people you lead, and overcoming obstacles. During my time as a club officer, we partnered with Children’s Village, first when we did the Christmas toy drive, then when we went through training to volunteer with the kids.
I believe leadership can be represented by both an individual or a group. This year I was chosen to be captain for both basketball and football cheerleading. Because I was captain, I had to lead the other cheerleaders by teaching underclassmen the cheers, choosing which cheers we did, and arranging practices for the team. I not only find myself as a great leader in cheerleading, I also find myself to be a great leader in track. Because I start so many events, I am always staying after practice to practice starting blocks.
When I think of leadership, I think of it as a skill that not everyone can develop. For me, it took numerous times of being a follower or a leader, before developing this skill and form the type of leader that I wanted to become. The particular leadership experience that I’m most proud of would have to be leading my high school wrestling team. I started off the season by enthusiastically creating an atmosphere that new members of the team would feel welcomed and strengthened the bonds I had with veteran members.
Calling yourself a leader is easier said than done as leadership is not about being boastful or overbearing, but the happy medium between the two. Leaders should be able to recognize the moment in which one (a leader) is needed, and then take control of the situation to set an example for others; however, this should not be done disdainfully. The best leaders are those who are role models, looked up to, and inspirations for others. Sometimes leaders will leave an impression on others, whether it be from something they said or did. I hope to leave a long-lasting impression on my peers as a leader in the classroom.
I have found that being a leader means more often being a servant and volunteer. I don’t get much acknowledgment for the extra hours I spend every practice prepping or taking down the equipment. That's not the reason I do what I do. To put it simply, band taught me to care. Band taught me to care about my family at home, my family at school, and the random freshman I see struggling in the hallway.
Although I do not have a position in leadership yet, I believe that leadership does not only apply to large-scale events, but group work and responsibility in oneself's own actions as well. To me, leadership does not mean that someone can boss the entire group around, but to create a positive relationship with peers. Being able to build trust among your associates is the fundamental base of a relationship with the people that will be part of your life, which is also an essential part of leadership. I decided to join STEM, which allowed me to understand my potential with leadership. During group projects, we would make decisions together as a group, instead of separate individuals arguing over what to do.
I am a “leader” many ways in and out of school. In school I am in Environmental, Interact, Journalism, Elementary Connections, and Student Council clubs. I also hold offices in three of these clubs. I am Vice President of Student Council and Secretary in both Journalism and Environmental clubs. I am also involved with Youth Leadership; we go on monthly field trips around the county to learn about leadership roles in the community.
A leader is said to be someone who leads or commands a group, organization, or country. During highschool I have had the privilege to be a member of the varsity cheer squad. Being a member of this team has allowed me to work through many hardships but has also been very rewarding. I like to live by my mission statement, which is being friendly, outgoing, and compassionate, always putting my best foot forward remembering how far I have come rather than how far I still have to go. Imagine working eight months for one two minute and thirty second routine.
As a leader, people always look up to you and expect you to guide them and that’s exactly what I did.
