Personal Narrative: My Interview As A Nurse

The person I chose to interview that is in the health profession is my uncle's’ sister Nancy. She works as a dialysis nurse. Nancy chose her career field because she loves helping people. She saw her mother as a satisfied certified nursing assistant (CNA) as she grew up, and ever since then she knew that being a nurse was her lifelong passion. She could not wait until her mother would come home from work because she would always tell her about her day. Nancy thought that it was so fascinating, and that pushed her to becoming a nurse. As a nurse Nancy knew that her life would be stressful. Becoming a nurse means you have to be trained to work with all types of technology. She became trained in all of this because she wanted to make a well rounded nurse of herself. Strong computer skills are needed also.
Nancy described her life as a nurse consisted of long hours and sometimes can be very hectic. To Nancy it’s important to have the mindset of being able to think critically remember these are people lives so you can’t afford to have short cuts. She knew that working as a nurse meant that she would have to give up free time for her work and yes it is stressful, but she also knows how to handle a stressful day. To her the first part of making work situations less stressful is to not bring your own personal stress to work. Working in the emergency room means you have to keep calm in order to save a patient life. A lot of patients who end up in the hospital tend to be nervous, so I asked Nancy what does she do to create a great experience for her patients. It’s very hard dealing with the many different personalities especially when they are sick. Nancy also recommends, “ For any young person I suggest you finish the bachelor degree program, It will take you further when exploring management. Don’t forget that this is a 24 hour 7 day a week job so understand that you will be giving up some weekends. You have to be flexible when it comes to your time. Exploring a masters degree as a nurse practitioner is the way to go now.” Nancy is hardworking nurse, but every nurse needs a break. On her free time, Nancy loves hanging out with her two granddaughters. Spending time with family is very important especially when your time is very limited. Second thing Nancy loves to do on her free time is catching up on tv shows that she missed during the week. Since she works 24/7 she tends to miss a lot of her favorite tv shows. Nancy is like any other human being when it comes to their free time, from watching tv to being with family
