I have had many opportunities to grow as a leader through my involvement in clubs and organizations both inside and outside school. I have developed leadership skills through my involvement in student government and community theatre. My involvement in both student government and community theatre has not only made me a better leader, but also a more confident and organized person.
In the spring of my junior year, I was elected as the Student Body President of the Alamance-Burlington Middle College for the 2017-2018 school year. Our student government was recently established. We did not have a constitution and in previous years, the elections had not been taken seriously. I intend to change the role of student government at my school. For example, at our first meeting of the 2017-2018 school year, I proposed that we draft a constitution for ourselves and for the future student governments at the middle college. We began discussing ideas for our school’s constitution. I proposed that we establish an honor code, delegate which powers go to which positions, including checks and balances, and how elections are held and who is qualified. One or two representatives from each of the public high schools in the Alamance-Burlington school system were asked to attend monthly meetings to discuss student government and our community as a whole.
