My time in 4-H, working, volunteering, and my first semester of college have provided me with leadership opportunities and experiences that were often challenging. In order to cope with these challenges, I had to develop skills that would allow me to move forward. The first of which is the ability to work well on a team. This skill is one that I’ve had to practice in many environments such as completing a group project, playing softball, working in food service, and volunteering as a camp counselor.
This past week, I conducted an informational interview with Aaron Riipa, a Sourcing Manager in Media for General Mills (at their headquarters). I first got into contact with this person by meeting another employee at the same company. The other worker was speaking to one of my student groups and after chatting once the meeting was over he thought it would be helpful for me to chat to another person. Aaron is head of supply chain recruiting at the U for General Mills and as he could be the one hiring me someday he was definitely someone I needed to speak with. He was perfect for me as he started out in buying and now is in sourcing, which are two paths I am considering taking.
To take action I will begin to speak with grocery stores and see if we can come up with a plan, where grocery stores can donate their extra food that is going to waste to certain “food deserts”. Possibly we can make a deal with one chain grocery store particularly. Grocery stores have a great deal of foods that goes to waste, so why not donate to a good cause? Then I will work to make food trucks out of school buses, where we can find volunteers to drive the trucks into low-income areas and offer the fruits and vegetables, as well as easy meals. I am sure we would have no problem finding volunteers, I believe many of my social work friends would be interested in driving the food truck once in a while, and then the average middle-class person
Leadership is the action of leading a group or organization. To be an effective leader one must be honest, trustworthy, and contain a large amount of integrity. The traits and qualities of an effective leader were taught to me during my time in JROTC. JROTC stresses its core values of honor, courage, and commitment to all of its members. Cadet's are expected to uphold these three values in every aspect of what you do as a cadet in this program.
This trip to the store was different. I almost got into a car accident! On top of that, I started cursing out the person that almost hit me. I was starting to feel road rage. That’s when I said to myself, “If this next store don’t have them, then you need to take yo ass home because, you’re burning all this gas and you’re about to get your truck tore, up over some damn Twinkies!”
While employed at white castles, there where numerous times were I was able to display leadership qualities. At certain points through out working there, I was challenged constantly with new situations. Consequently, new and often problems occurred, such as intoxicated customers, belligerent workers and hazards. I did my part as a team member, by trying to reduce any problems that I saw before it could get out of
During my time working at Safeway I gained invaluable experience in terms of both personal and professional growth. However, after nearly a year of working, I felt as if the job had become stagnant. There was no longer any unique experiences I could gain, and each shift felt indistinguishable from the last. Incidentally, this also meant that the job was very secure; the pay was adequate and I worked the same shifts every week. I was faced with the difficult decision of either furthering my personal development or maintaining a very secure job.
In the words of Psychologist, Lisa Haisha, “Great leaders don’t set out to be a leader… They set out to make a difference. Its never about the role, but always about the goal”. The most rewarding part of these leadership roles is when I see a student succeed. Whether it is a resident coming to me saying they aced their exam, a first year student that thanks me for the fun they had at orientation, or a student who gets an internship or job after I helped them with their resume, the success of each person that I helped lead inspires me to keep leading and keep making positive differences in peoples
For my no voice experience, I went to different stores throughout the day. I visited Wal-Mart, The Dollar Store, McDonalds, Wal-Greens, and Kroger. The most interesting experience was when I went to Wal-Green pharmacy and Kroger. At Wal-Greens, two women helped me.
Throughout my life, I have been chosen, or been elected, to be a leader on a plethora of occasions. Most often, these occasions are for classroom assignments or sporting events. About two years ago, I was on an AAU basketball team called the Shooting Stars, and we competed in an age division that was a year ahead of our actual ages. As a player, I was not the most athletic or the best at shooting the basketball, however I was a consistent starter and captain for the team. Every Tuesday and Thursday, and after a long day of school, school-related sports, and some homework, we would have an hour and a half long practice that started later in the evening.
As time went on I was able to take the role as the leader of the team and continue to build on these roles when I realized that I needed to step up to the
One of my future goals is to further expand my knowledge of aeronautical engineering. My strength in STEM and a strong work ethic will allow me to be an excellent aerospace engineering student. I am also interested in gaining a better understanding of the business aspects of the aerospace sector. I earned multiple Aeronautical awards, as well as several Solo Pilot certifications through aerospace education programs in Civil Air Patrol. I am planning to apply to Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University upon graduating from high school.
Displaying leadership, service, and character is, to me, very important. I have shown leader ship in many different ways throughout my life, one example being in the classroom. When there are table discussions I usually lead the group and try to make sure that everyone in that group has a chance to talk, government class has been a great example. Mr. Furlong gives us time to talk out controversial topics, and I help direct people at my table share what their views are with out belittlement by actively listening and responding in a positive way. Also when I respond to someone's thoughts and opinions I try to remain as open minded to their views because they are not always parallel.
Then communicate to the team to maintain a positive climate and learn from any mistakes. 3. I will give members of the team appreciation and support for their contributions. As a leader, I will inspire others with courage and hope by finding ways to celebrate accomplishments. 4.
In the early morning, before the sun crested itself over the horizon to form a hazy red and orange sky, I awoke, Immersed in a dull sense of fear that had accumulated greatly over the past year and a half while working at the Loray mill that was nestled in the small town of Gastonia. The population was nearly seventeen thousand in the year of 1929 and the town guessed it would be approximately doubled in around 10 years, but I had my doubts. Things were starting to take a turn for the worst. At one point, the fear I felt nearly rattled every bone in my body and threatened to snatch my breath away at any given moment if the timing was right. I was deathly afraid of losing my job like hundreds of men already have, as well as terrified of being unable to provide for my wife and children, being evicted from my home, or having to move away to find a new job...
