Healthcare was an unplanned career for me. I am not one of those people who knew that I was going into healthcare from an early age. This last week was not the best. I might've bombed my Chemistry final; I studied for days from the book and practice exams. The test was nothing like I expected it to be, and now my hopes of getting into the nursing program are going down the drain. I still need to find out what I got, but I just feel defeated. From the beginning of my nursing endeavors, I knew that working at Broward Health will be my goal. My work towards it wasn’t easy, but I hope that this healthy challenge will be rewarded one day. Whenever I could, I choose to have my clinical rotations at one of Broward Health System hospitals. My first three clinical rotations were on oncology floor at Broward Health, where I was exposed to patients with various and serious conditions. Despite the fact that most of these patients were suffering, they fought and had hopes in them that really made me going.
Healthcare has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. My mother has been a Certified Nursing Assistant for over twenty years. My passion for healthcare comes from watching her care for others family members over the years. Although I did not know what career I wanted to pursue, I knew early growing up that I was destined to work in healthcare. I became fascinated with helping others early in life.
I braced against my opponent on the field-- calves burning, sweat soaking through my hair. Anxiety overcame me. We were tied with twenty seconds left on clock, and the opponent was sprinting beside me with the ball. As we both charged towards the goal, I tried my best to knock the ball out of his mesh. Yet, my attempts proved to be fruitless.
Nursing has always been a passion of mine, especially labor and delivery nursing. While others in my class would cringe away from the birth video in my freshman health class, I watched in fascination, tearing up at how natural and joyous childbirth was. When I told my parents, they were hesitant when it came to their support. My mother thought it was a messy job that required too much liability insurance. Unfortunately for her I was headstrong and refused to listen.
Nursing, and everything that it entails, cannot be easily described in just one simple word or phrase. It goes beyond the meaning of a profession and the stereotypical definition of treating the ill. Nursing is the “protection, promotion, and optimization of health and abilities, prevention of illness and injury, alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis and treatment of human response, and advocacy in the care of individuals, families, communities, and populations” (American Nurses Association, 2010, p. 1). Therefore, it is a career that requires dedication, passion, critical thinking, and knowledge. It demands commitment and an understanding of its core values and concepts, as well as the nurse’s own personal philosophy and principles.
Balancing nursing school and my entire life can be hectic. I handle my scheduling problem by having a routine and an organizer in my phone. As soon as I get done eating my lunch that’s when I usually study. I go to my local Barnes and Noble to study because I can focus there better than at home. I usually take a break from studying every time my brain can’t retain the thing that I’m studying, so I won’t burn out from studying.

The challenge of positively impacting others’ lives was one of the things that led me into medicine. When I decided to pursue a career in medicine I wasn’t sure which specialty I wanted to dedicate my life to.
