Time is ticking as sweat pours from my body, my muscles are aching and my legs feel numb as each second goes by. The 400m race seems like an eternity as my heart beats erratically with every stride. As I approach the last 100m stretch, the crowds are cheering loudly and my eyes are focused on the finish line. The thought enters my mind; will I make it to the end? I push through the pain and as I reach the end my legs give out and I collapse over the finish line, grasping the baton with all my might. As I lay on the ground gasping for breath, I look up to see my teammates standing above me, each smiling ear to ear. I take a deep breath and a smile forms on my face. I am feeling both relief and pure excitement. We did it. We broke the school record! A long term goal of my team and me was to break the school record in the 4x400 meter relay. Like most goals in life, they are not achievable without passion or perseverance, also known as grit. Despite a few setbacks over the years with injuries, our passion for the sport allowed us to endure through the pain. Coming very close to breaking the school record the previous year we were devastated after all the hard work and endless days of practice we had put it. Instead of letting that experience impede us, we never gave up and were more inspired than ever this indoor track season to try again as this was also our last season as a team together before two of them graduated and went to college. We were determined to break the school record we once came so close to with our one last chance.
