Privilege is a word that I hear very often and especially now that I’m in college I hear it almost everyday. I’m glad that I have heard this word a plethora of times because it has allowed me to analyze and see my role in privilege. Addition to the in class CDI “ Unmasking Your Privilege”, I also went to “Paving the Way: First- Generation College Students”, both workshops were informational and I truly enjoyed them. My main takeaway from the workshops is that although I am a Black Women I do have some privilege, I have learned that there are levels and different types of privilege.
My privilege lies within sexual orientation, religion, education, nationality and ability, this is because I am Heterosexual, Christian, American, abled bodied and I have the opportunity to move into higher education. The college process is not easy and stressful when you have people in your life that have experienced it before, so I know it's extremely hard when someone is the first in their family. This workshop was able to push people to have empathy, by providing insight of how a first gen student might be feel when they step onto a college campus. Common feelings could be academic culture shock and social integration, This workshop also addressed the fact that coded language and acronyms is a big part of AU’s campus life and how it has created a barrier for first gens and also new students in general. Coded words like “OCL, AU Central and DAR” make people that are new to the campus to feel unwelcome and like they don't belong
