Upon arriving to Miami Dade College, you will never imagine all the resources offered to students to succeed during their scholastic years. I’ve been lucky enough to been advised by some of the best staff at their Interamerican campus. From their advisement office to their profoundly knowledgeable professors. As a current student of ENC1102, we were required to attend one section with a tutor at the writing center. I always thought I had sufficient knowledge of the English language and taking time out of my busy schedule to attend a section with a tutor was absurd.
I am interested in Howard University because it is an HBCU that encompass the themes of cultural diversity and education. Your commitment to scholars ensures me that at your school I will be right at home. Since I intend on on going down a medical path, I know that Howard University will provide me with best resources to follow my dreams. As a child I was always interested in the worlds around me and how things worked. As a result I participated in a Summer Enrichment Program located at Indiana University in Bloomington.
I 'm a laid back guy, who enjoys spending time with my friends, trying new things, and meeting new people. I love living in the city since there 's always something to do. I 'm an engineer and enjoy my job and its challenges; but, I spend all day in an office and by the end of the day I 'd rather go out and have some fun than go straight home and call it a night. I 'm from a military family, so I grew up overseas and lived in the mid-west after college; but I 've always call Maryland home. I love adventures, city life, the Ravens, concerts & festivals, and just hanging out with friends - since it’s more about the company than the event, I’m typically up for anything.
My grandfather, mother, and entire family were raised in Bellingham, Washington as was I. I can’t imagine going to any other school than Western Washington University. This past year has been a whirlwind. I had to decide which schools to apply to, take many tests, finish up a senior project, found a new passion, and lost someone close to me. I now realize that the only school I want to go to is Western. A few weeks ago I went to tour a few colleges in Eastern Washington.
When I was was younger, I was a caterpillar crawling around trying to get through life, waiting to turn into the beautiful butterfly I know I could soon become. I made good decisions along with bad ones, saw the beauty in life as well as the unpleasant. I was like everyone else trying to be their own person, but now as I look at myself in the mirror I can finally see who I really am. I see myself as the beautiful butterfly I once dreamed of becoming, ready to fly down my own path. I have been in my chrysalis and I am finally out and ready to fly into my bright future.
I thought about writing this long and exaggerated speech about me leaving Maryland but I think I 'll just keep it short and sweet. These past few months people constantly asked me why I wanted to move somewhere I do not know anyone. My response, I know Jesus! No matter where I go I have a friend that is watching over and protecting me. This is a picture of my closet door, in my apartment, at Morgan.
I will never forget my 8th grade trip to Washington DC. One of my most profound memories was meeting Congressman John Lewis. When I was first informed about the upcoming consultation, I couldn’t believe it. I couldn’t believe I was going to have the opportunity of listening to such a well known person’s inspiring story. After going to many museums on the second day of the trip, we finally made our way on the bus to the Cannon House Office Building, right across from the US capitol.
I am first generation college student. I started Florida Gulf Coast University four years after I migrated from Jamaica along with my Dad, in pursuits of “an opportunity”- something that is very scarce outside of the continental United States. Before coming to FGCU, I went to Miramar High School; I graduated with honors and promised my Dad that within four years I would bring home my bachelors degree in Finance. August 14th, 2013 marked move in day at Florida Gulf Coast University. My first few weeks at Florida Gulf Coast University introduced me to the dreariest days and nights of my life.
This is me Today I am a kid in school, just a number to most people. Just a statistic to my high school, and to Wake County Public school system. The not the only this I am, this is not the only place I have been or the last place I will be going. You see for me to be just another number here, or a good statistic at my high school, I had to have learn a thing or two along the way, this journey that I am on, that all of us are on, had to start somewhere.
It seems that New York University was built for me. The university’s unique campus is spread out around New York City, the greatest city in the world, but even better is what lies inside the campus. Professors that are recognized experts in their fields and an alumni network known for helping students find internships and jobs await prospective NYU students. NYU is unrivaled in its focus to help students expand their borders by offering various opportunities to study abroad and also to explore NYC. The College of Arts and Sciences will best prepare me for my pursuit of a career in medicine.
My mother entered my bedroom and immediately her face widened in absolute shock. “What did you do?” I froze, panicked. I had been discovered. Twelve-year-old me was sitting on the bedroom floor when she had come in.
I was raised in a city of two realities; I grew up in Baltimore. My parents immigrated from the Netherlands a year before I was born to pursue opportunity in the United States. My sister and I attended a private Quaker school because my parents could afford it. On one hand, there is a Baltimore presented by the TV show “The Wire,” on the other you have my reality. As a white, upper-class, male I haven't had to overcome any significant obstacles to follow my dreams.
I can contribute my hard work to the Honors College community. I think that I am hardworking and I love to work with others to help solve problems because two heads are always better than one. I would contribute my ideas to the lessons and help others when they need it. I love to be able to work with other people outside my comfort zone and be able to hear their ideas and combine ideas to come up with something that will benefit everyone in the community.
When I first came to Georgetown Day School as a recently accepted applicant, I chose to visit the school's chess club. As a chess enthusiast, I expected a group of like-minded individuals peacefully playing chess or attentively watching a friend play. However, instead I witnessed frantic moving, nonsensical yelling, and the constant beeping of chess clocks. Confused but nonetheless intrigued, I tried to join in, and a member explained that they were playing bughouse, a little-known, fast-paced variant of chess played between teams of two.
The hospital was where I made my first friends and where I not only got the care I needed, but I got to be a kid as much as possible. In the hospital, there is a huge fake tree. To this day I am not sure what it is made out of. On Thursdays, they had an interactive finger puppet show. I remember I would get so excited because it made me feel like I wasn 't just trapped in a hospital room.
