This literary piece “The Making and Unmaking of a child soldier” by Ishmael Beah, unravels aspects of the world often looked over. The book opens an eye on how child soldiers are used as spawn for civil wars for ruthless warlords over drug empires in Sierra Leone. Children are forced to become soldiers to serve for military and save their country, Sierra Leone. Child soldiers are also forced to work and there are many different jobs which are given to child soldiers.
There is a problem in the world and something needs to be done of it. There are children, primarily in Africa, that are forced to massacre innocent men and women. These kids are called child soldiers. Child soldiers are kids who are associated in war. A popular book about child soldier is an autobiography by Ishmael Beah called A Long Way Gone.
War has developed into such an unavoidable part of life that we repeatedly overlook or neglect its outcome on adolescent’s minds. Even though millions of children all around the world endure pain from the psychological repercussion of armed conflict, thousands of others reluctantly partake in the same and are damaged for a lifetime. Child soldiers have been a major issue in countries all over the world for a very long time. For example, Afghanistan is recruiting children to become a part of the Taliban, one of the largest terrorist groups in the country. A theme presented by Ishmael Beah in the book A Long Way Gone: memoirs of a boy soldier is that when all is lost, there is always hope. He went through brutal drugs and a dark childhood while he was in a civil war but he still was able to push through it and find happiness.
When you picture war, what do you see? Is it people with tanks and Ak-47s fighting each other? Maybe adults in camo fighting in the desert? Or perhaps even an image from your Call of Duty video game pops into your head. But what most people don’t imagine is children, ages 9-15, fighting each other and dying at the hands of guns and other weapons.
One day I was told a story of something horrible. My Grandmother told me a story about her mom’s childhood. The reason why it was so sad is, that she grew up in the times where children her age were getting pulled away from their families to be a child soldier. It was hard for her, she described it as something her mom would remember forever because her own best friend his family barely had money in order to gain very little money, they sent her away to be a child soldier. However, my grandmother was only so young she didn’t know how to fend for herself
Child soldiers are an element of the Civil War that rarely gets discussed. Most people associate the Civil War with men fighting for their beliefs and do not realize that boys or children fought as well. Children were as much a part of the war as adults; the reason for this is they too have to live with the results of the war. Children under eighteen years of age were not allowed to fight in the war but took up other positions to aid the war. These children of the Civil War supported and fought during it for a variety of reasons; these reasons include their patriotism and eagerness to fight and prove themselves.
Many young children under aged have been taken in by the government. They are being held captive tell they are drugged enough and brainwashed to go out and kill or to be killed. They are forced to train to kill under the influence of drugs and they are hardly aware of what they or doing. Child soldiers should be given amnesty because of the absents of their minds and them not being able to process what they are doing. These children are often seen as targets because they are under aged and not able to take responsibility for their actions so they are targeted to be able to kill without punishment.
And also if they don’t listen or do what is told they are killed. There are some people who believe that there’s not a problem with being a child soldier. My opinion is that child soldiers isn’t such a good idea because on the article Child soldiers, Prosecution it says “ Child soldiers are not morally responsible for their actions. Children are often forced into fighting.” And also in the article Child soldiers-Summative essay it says “They have no choice, if they don’t fight their killed, if they fight they kill.”
An unhealthy obsession with guns, being drugged to make killings seem normal, and being undoubtedly loyal to commanders is only part of what a child soldier is. Child soldiers can be dangerous and make up many armies in war-torn countries. In much of the world, usually in unstable countries, when conflict breaks out, children can quickly be swept up and put on the front lines to fight. Children may carry ten-pound guns and use bullets twice the size of their fingers. Some children are old enough to understand what they are doing, and others have no idea.
First of all, child soldiers are treated very poorly - like machines - to perform one task: kill. So, the captors do whatever they can to train the children to kill. Ishmael Beah, once a child soldier, was rescued by the UNICEF after being a child soldier for 2 years. As a child soldier, he saw crying children shot before his eyes, and he was brainwashed and drugged into oblivion. His captors desensitized him so much that he said, “Shooting became just like a drinking a glass of water.”
Child soldiers are kids that have been taken from their homes, given drugs, then given weapons. They must live as soldiers. They are thought to kill, or be killed. Can you imagine someone burning down your house, then taking you to kill for them? There is much debate over whether child soldiers should be allowed into the US.

In the world today, there is more than 25 countries who still actively use children in warfare. Child soldiers are human beings under the age of 18 who participate in military actions. They are evidently cheaper to maintain and to train than adult soldiers. They are also more loyal and obedient because the young respect their elders. It has been noted that estimately, 300 thousand children were recruited to fight and perform in war (Child Soldiers.)
