How many times has one action by one person influenced crowds of people to follow? This is known as “mob mentality”: when a group of people is influenced by a person’s actions to change their behavior and think as a group. In both The Crucible by Arthur Miller and “Half-Hanged Mary” by Margaret Atwood, groups of people who share the same beliefs can conform to a certain idea, whether it is correct or not. No matter how one views the story, it is evident that both communities in the play and poem were determined to band together and to bring these “witches” to extinction. The reasons for having the accused executed seemed unlawful, and it is presumed that with the acceptance of the community, unjustifiable actions become acceptable.
The Crucible was published in the year 1953, during the height of the Cold War. The United States this was the Mccarthy era, which was the period when many feared the spread of Communism in our country. Senator Joseph Mccarthy initiated this whole movement that led to McCarthyism and the House Un-American Activities Committee, which sought to put a halt to all Communist activity in the United States. In addition, The Crucible by Arthur Miller is an incredible play that gives feedback on Salem Witch Trials in Massachusetts not only that, but it parallels the McCarthy “witch hunts” that took place in the mid 1900’s. The play is an allegory, which means that the story holds a much more deeper meaning than what we perceive.
Honesty is something we all want. Honesty describes person’s nature and builds more trust. Abigail gets affected by the witch craft and they try to find who is behind all of this. Honesty is a key to describe your nature. The crucible has a really unique story.
The True Crimes In a town full of religious-imposed justice, is the crimes happening in the towns actually considered true crimes? Should the people that committed the crimes be held responsible? In Arthur Miller’s play “The Crucible” the town “Salem” many are being accused of witchery, which is a crime in their society. The problem is that they aren't witches, but normal people to be hanged.
By looking at The Crucible by Arthur Miller one can see that the characterization of John Proctor reveals the theme of reputation and integrity, which is important because refusing to tell lies to protect his reputation and stop delirium from spreading throughout Salem. John Proctor states that the woman of Salem who have been locked up for witchcraft:”Excellency, does it not strike upon you that so many of these women have lived so long with such upright reputation”(3.1.305-309). Proctor represents reputation because he would rather die than have his reputation downed to a victimizer. Protecting his reputation motivates John Proctor to deny that witchcraft exists in the village. All he hears is crying out of screams and wailing which is a cause of the Devil 's work: “What 's she doing?
Persistence: continuing firmly or obstinately in a course of action in spite of difficulty or opposition. In the play, The Crucible by Arthur Miller, multiple characters posses this personality trait. Miller has shown this trait frequently throughout the acts. Each time being persistent has concluded differently for the characters and has caused tragic side effects responsible for the outcome in the play. Of the many characters sharing this disposition, John Proctor, Abigail Williams, and Giles Corey are just three examples.
To most people, being honorable is important. To them, upholding their morals and protecting their beliefs is crucial. To others, it may not be as significant. Some people might give in and sacrifice their morals to save their reputation. It’s up to those people to decide which is right.

Arthur Miller’s portrayal of a town in the midst of a downfall “The Crucible”, tells the story of how mob mentality and hysteria can significantly influence not only individuals but the whole town. This mob mentality leads to unthoughtful acts and false accusations. Two characters who demonstrate how mob mentality can lead to the demise of Salem are Abigail and Mary Warren. As Abigail begins to be accused she is pressured to deter from the truth. While Mary Warren gets pressured by Proctor to reveal the truth about Abigail, but the overwhelming pressure from the mob makes her turn from the truth.
