The overall theme of Gary Paulsen's memoir Dirk the Protector is help will appear in your time of need. For example, Dirk appeared moments before Gary ran straight into the bullies after working at the bowling alley. This shows that Dirk was there when Gary needed him the most. Even though it might have been the hamburger, Dirk stayed with Gary for a long time, even after he left the bullies left Gary alone. Another example from the text is that Gary was also there in Dirks time of need.
He starts to reflect on different moments throughout the night. The next day, Paul explains about Detering, and what happened to him. Detering tried to run away from war and wanted to go back home because he couldn’t take it anymore. However when running away, he was caught by the authorities and was put on trial. Paul explains that the authority doesn’t know about Detering homesickness, and there is no other choice of what to do about Detering.
I'm not afraid of you , Erik, come on” ( 253) “Erik he tried to kill me” (3). These two quotes show that at first Paul was scared of Erik. now he is no longer afraid.
Paul stayed at home for college, unwilling to "leave the fish he had not yet caught” which in reference to the unfinished business he had to catch up on. Paul on the other hand was the rebellious one of the two. After he decided to stay back home in Montana he becomes a well known news reporter. After spending much time alone away from Norman he starts to drink more, and some may say he became an alcoholic. Not only did he begin drinking more than usual, he was introduced to gambling, and it turned into a troubling addiction.
People change people. In the novel Tangerine, by Edward Bloor, Paul changes his attitude, perspective, and actions based on the character influences around him. Even though Paul starts off shy and timid of his older brother Erik, he learns that he must stand up for himself or Erik will always win, and as he is exposed to more characters and environments he begins to develop as a character to be more outspoken. Paul was the family Runt, constantly being ignored and overlooked. Paul could never speak of anything due to the fear of his brothers reaction “I didn’t know what else to say!
Being a loving, protective mother, Taylor is afraid to leave Turtle with a stranger for long periods of time so decides to make a schedule with Lou Ann, her roommate. She also make payments to Lou Ann by making food every day when she gets home. By doing this, Taylor does not worry about leaving Turtle in a stranger’s hands and does not need to pay for a babysitter. In the text it says, “I cooked on weekends, and also on any weeknight that Lou Ann had kept Turtle. It would be a kind of payment.”
People who recognize and accept their fate are willing to admit it, and Paul’s statement shows he fully knew what his problems were. He also appreciated his brother 's efforts to help him. After a conversation about helping Neal, Paul said ‘“But maybe what he likes is somebody trying to help him,”’ (52). Paul was not at all referring to Neal; he was referring to himself. He wanted Norman to know that he didn’t want to be rescued.
Paul gets to go on leave and he was sitting in his room thinking about his books. He mentioned that he “want[ed] to feel the same powerful, nameless urge that [he] used to feel when [he] turned to [his] books”(171). This shows that he realizes everything at home is so different from a year ago. Paul can’t find a connection to his home now like he used to since this home isn’t home to him anymore. This means that he recognises that he cannot bring back his youth as hard as he tries to or wants to.
As a result, all he has left to prove his worth is his courage and strength. He feels that it is his role to be a rock of the family, hence his unwavering commitment to his land. Above all, this pride and obligation to his land blind him from the reality of his environment. He has too much faith in the land and has invested too much to ever have an unbiased judgment of his conditions. Paul’s thought process is impaired by a looming surreal numbness to his situation.
So Their parents talk their parents. Seth and Kendra will be staying with their Grandparents. They have seen them a couple times, but never been to their house. It's a long ride and Seth keeps asking "are we there yet. " His father simply replies by saying "we get there when we get there."
He spent the day with Segan and when it was time for Tyson to head home, the bus that he was supposed to take didn’t show up. Tyson continued to call Segan and tell him what had happened. Segan invited him to his home to stay for the night so he could head back in the morning, an offer which Tyson was eager to accept.(Contemporary Authors
Willa Cather’s short story, “Paul’s Case” is about a young man who is determined to make his aspirations a reality by all means necessary. That meant being deceitful as a start of gaining control and social status and telling lies to get to where he felt like he belonged, but where did he belong? This desire was the beginning of a journey that would eventually leave him with nothing. There is something unusual about Paul, something that can only be explained by his demeanor and actions throughout the story. With that said, I intend to construct a complete character analysis of Paul as he searches for satisfaction.
