On May 20,1996 I was born Damione Freeman growing up in a small city named Pell City. Growing up wasn't easy for me father was never around just leaving me with my mother. As a child I was always happy, caring, and well mannered. When I turned five I started living with my grandmother, Dianne Freeman and my uncle, Akeem Freeman. At the age of five I was torn away from my mother because of her husband and his issues.
I wish to apply for the position of a Supportive Roommate at your reputable organization-Community Living Alternative Services (CLAS). I am a caring and mature professional and an experienced disability support worker for nine years. I have a passion for improving the quality of life of people with developmental disabilities. I have worked with people of different ages and disabilities in different support work settings- group homes, community access services, job and career coaching, as well as life skill coaching. I am Shayla Padgett, and I work for South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department (SCVRD). I have over nine years of experience in human services; seven of those years are in rehabilitation. For the past two years I have worked as an Assessment and Career Exploration Specialist and a Job Preparedness Instructor for SCVRD. Using a variety of assessment tools, I assist our clients establish a vocational objective that coincides with their individual interests and abilities. In addition to assessments, I instruct classes that cover a variety of soft skills that prepare clients for careers.

It has been the longest 7 years, 7 weeks, 7 days, 7 hours, 6 minutes, and 23 seconds of my life! It has been this long exactly since the last time I saw Ms. Pointy, and I think I will eventually go crazy if I don’t see her sometime soon. Ms. Pointy just happens to be my most favored teacher of all time. I had her in my second year of fifth grade-the first year I have ever been held back in school. I looked out my window desperately and deep in thought.
One girl in particular, Sarah, was extremely displeased with my arrival. I was unaware of this for the longest time until she made it very clear. Sarah had seemed friendly, she was very intelligent, and she was popular. I learned that Sarah was also extremely competitive and envious when others did better than her, and I learned it the hard way.
Loving,caring,unselfish and hardworking are only a few of the many powerful words I can use to describe my mentor, Joyce M. I know some people might have experienced what she has been through but nobody is standing as tall as she is today. As we all grow up and age we change mentally and physically. At this point in life I was only about 7 years old. Tall and skinny about 4’5 average with dirty brown hair and dark brown eyes, I was an Emotional but strong minded normal elementary school girl.
I first met Kelsey when the two of us joined cross-country the summer before our freshman year. Back then, I never would have guessed that we would end up being such close friends. I am so glad we did. Kelsey is an inspiration to be around, filling any atmosphere with positivity. Even in the toughest situations, the hardest cross-country workouts, Kelsey is able to bring out the fun in a situation.
During that time, I helped a variety of people from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds improve their self-sufficiency skills. Ever since I could remember, I have always wanted to help people learn, grow, and make improvements in their lives. That desire has ignited a purpose in me to earn the appropriate degree and certification. This will enable me to render professional help for those persons whom may be facing physical and/or intellectual impairments.
I feel that it is necessary to have a vast working knowledge in the largest service provided by our agency, Rehabilitation Counseling. This degree will give me the qualifications to provide this service to those in my community who have disabilities. I look forward to explaining my experience, my plans for completing the program requirements,
This girl and I had a friendship so deep. If I thought something she said before I got a chance to. We went everywhere together. It was like we were joined at the hip in a weird way. I was always there when she needed me whether the issue was important or not so serious.
