At the bmx dirt finals Stephen Murray attempted a double backflip and landed on his neck breaking many of the vertebrae in his neck, this almost killed him.(Murray) “Stephen was transported to University of Maryland Medical Centre Shock Trauma Unit. He had flat lined in the ambulance and again after reaching Shock Trauma, where medication was administered to bring him back. Undergoing the first of two 7 hour surgeries, Doctors confirmed Stephen had crushed his 3, 4 and 5 cervical vertebrae” (Carrera). The accident left him paralyzed from the neck down, he had to spent a lot of time in the hospital and had a lot of obstacles to overcome. Stephen had lost all of his personal freedom taken away.
Shortly afterwards, he broke both of his hands in a motorcycle accident
Kart Crash Back before I was born my father liked to race all kinds of things from go-karts, to mini-motorcycles and cars, he liked to race is what I’m getting at. He told that he had one of his only car accident back when he was 15 or 16 years old about how he rolled his go cart while racing an old rival. It was in the circle that we live in now he was coming around first left turn and he flipped it because the road had been redone. He went over the ditch and the ditch was about 4 foot deep ditch and he went over into the small forest on the over side.
Diversity Practicum #1 For my first diversity practicum outing, I went to Lalibela’s Ethiopian restaurant in Sioux Falls. I am typically adventurous when going out to eat to hole-in-the-wall restaurants like this, but this was definitely different. Upon first arrival, the place was empty except for a table of young adult males in the back who all stopped to stare at me when I got there. They soon returned to their conversation in a language was that was completely beyond me.
In the past I have struggled with my biracial identity. As a child I was confused about which community I belonged in because I am a mix of Navajo and Caucasian. As I got older, I began to question myself and who I was. I felt like I did not belong to either the Native or Caucasian community because in both groups I felt like someone else. I felt as if I had to live two lives that were completely separated.
Challenges are events that are used to change you for the better should you choose it accept it. The challenges I have faced wasn’t a matter of choice but of something that I have no control over. Some people will tell you it’s a burden, some say it’s an entitlement or free ride. Science says it’s just having a high amount of melatonin due to geographical location for survival. To me though, being black probably one of the biggest challenges a human can have in America at least I find it terribly perplexing.
Remember a time when I first discovered that the world was stranger as I was a baby hearing noises and seeing objects for the very first time. As a child growing up I began to understand the use of the noise and the functions of the objects. I notice the world was strange by the different colors and patterns while looking outside. The world seems strange with the different races, height, and sizes of the different race. It 's seem strange that people of different races spoke and wrote in different languages.
The negro community is no stranger than disadvantage. Even on the surface of thought with the weapons Richard and his friend uses against the white children. Richard’s situation is a perfect foreshadow of modern society. He gets gashed with a broken glass bottle and instead of focusing on who threw it, he gets blamed. Where do we see that today ?
I have blond hair and pale skin. On the color wheel, my father is a rich mocha, my sister is a warm copper, and my mother is a perfectly tanned caramel; I am somewhere between cream and eggshell on the opposite end of the spectrum. Being stereotypically white can be difficult when you’re African American. The beginning of high school was when I first began to feel that my fair complexion hid my true identity.
Although my family dealt—and still deals— with it every day, the racial identity never was pointed out. As a little kid, I never understood why my dad sometimes was treated differently for me he always was just my dad. Later on I would understand why, but my idea “you are whoever you are” still was my life credo that I never doubted. I have never questioned myself on what I identify as before the conversation with the person that I met once and thought I would forget the next day, but it became the turning point of my life.
Heaved I ever experience racism? How did it make me feel? Yes, I have experience racism. It was not the best feeling ever it made me feel like crap. It’s funny how people make you feel if you’re a different race.
I was the first girl born in my family. About two years later, my sister came into the picture. Then a few years later after that, my brother came as well. Growing up in a predominantly female household, you’d expect the rooms to be cluttered with Barbie dolls or frilly dresses and skirts but that was not the case for me. I was the “tom-boy”; I would’ve rather cut my own toe off than put on make-up.
The world is filled with people, and like snowflakes, each person is not the same as another. Each person identifies with different aspects of their lives to create their own personal identities. I personally identify with my Italian side of my family to help form who I am today. I have found myself connecting with this side more so than the other parts of my identity. It affects how I live my life by becoming the center to the culture surrounding me.
Have you ever been scared before? Well, I have and I’m about to tell you my terrifying moment with a bus. Now let’s get on with the story. It was a regular day with my friend Lexie and I. When her mom came out and told Lexie “It’s about time to leave for the haunted bus ride so start getting ready.”
Way back along time ago, I was minding my business playing with my best friend who I knew every since I was a little kitten. We would spend nights and days together and was always by each others side. This was all up until my best friend sat me down and told me the bad news.
