Prologue (Continued)
Evelia held her breath unsure of what to expect. Just like her, Chuo and Adam stood still when they realized their friends weren 't coming back right away. While looking at the balcony door, she started to think about what happened one more time: The starless night, the hole in the sky, that strange feeling that they were being watched...
It’s just your imagination. You 'll see! She thought, trying to shake that feeling of complete unreality. You’re just stressed out about being late.
Then the air was suddenly filled with the cries of awe and shock of Ernest and the rest of her friends.
Chuo spoke pretending to be calm, “According to the Drake equation the probability of alien life is negligible. We are alone.”
Evelia nodded, but her trembling fingers couldn’t hide her fear. Adam took her hand between his and kissed it.

Shivering, she uncovered her ears. A high-pitched ringing pierced her eardrums and then… nothing. She couldn’t even hear her own thoughts. Soon, she found out, in the worst possible way, that she could still hear.
A shriek coming from the party hall shattered the silence.
Evelia gasped. Another scream came from below. She moved away from the stair rail as if it were red hot. By the time she walked back to Adam, they could hear nothing but blood-curdling screams coming from downstairs.
A loud bang, almost like a shotgun blast, made them turn around. Claudia had opened the emergency exit and was staggering slowly towards them. Her glasses were broken and a thread of blood was trickling down her forehead.
“Clau, what’s wrong?” Evelia peeked at the door. “Where are the others?”
Claudia stared blurrily in every direction before managing to focus on them. Once she was able to recognize them, she started crying and collapsed into Evelia’s arms. She was drowning in her own words.
