The sun was bright as it filled the car blinding the people inside. The air was full of their anticipation, and I was thoroughly excited. The car door slid open when we reached the end of the path into a parking lot at the top of the mountain. The sun was just over the horizon, and we were unpacking the two vans. Everyone was laden with climbing equipment when we grabbed our bottles and started out on the trail to the Pilot Mountain peak. About seventeen minutes later, we reached our climbing site. Everyone sat their gear down and got to work setting up our climb. I got the harnesses out and ready, by the time I did, everyone else was practically done. The pulley was just above me, and I reached out to touch it symbolizing that I had finished the climb. I grabbed that pulley with glee and relief. I was so proud of myself for going beyond what I thought. I looked out behind me and saw a view like no other. I was so relaxed until I felt my hands release all of their tension, and I couldn’t react fast enough to save myself. I swung off of the rock and into the air. The rope was twisted around so I was facing the endless valley and could see vastness. I couldn’t think or breathe. I was flying and time stopped. My heart stopped and everything froze. I didn’t know I would go like this. Blood rushed through me like crazy as I fell, but it seemed so slow. Wham! My head and body slammed back into the rock and that slapped me back into the present. The harness jutted up and cut into my thighs. I yelped in pain from all over my body and looked down to see that I was suspended in air. The time all of this took place were mere seconds, and my belayer had stopped me from falling off the mountain. I still was not breathing or thinking.
