Personal Narrative: Three Little Birds By Bob Marley

As I was walking home from school I came across a house that was playing Bob Marley’s “Three Little Birds.” The mellow rhythm of the song that late summer day not only carried lyrics of optimism but it also teleported me to my childhood. The soothing reggae song reminded me of the theme song of one of my favorite childhood T.V shows, Arthur, which also contained reggae beat along with words of positivity. I continued to walk and the music grew inaudible. My mind was no longer singing along to Marley’s song, it was now focused on the four-year-old me that sat in the middle of the living room carpet in front of the television set that displayed Arthur, a children’s cartoon series. Just like a photograph can make you laugh, a memory can also affect my mood. The mind can lead me to think about the sleepovers I had at my best friend’s house. Despite the ecstatic emotion I carried out at the sleepover, I display gloomy feelings as I am remembering because it is a past event and things have changed overtime. I am no longer friends with her yet because we moved apart and lost communication. After looking back on our adventures in the school’s playground it has affected me today because I regret growing distant. Still the happy moments of our friendship brings a mixture of nostalgia and sadness. Emotions play a major part when it comes to remembering. Like a first draft in Patricia Hampl’s “Memory and Imagination”, a raw memory can display a lot of real emotions compared to the polished version you are to exhibit to the public. The polished version comes after you have established what would be included and what details should be rephrased. The memories we instinctively receive contain emotions that we personally feel inevitably without the need to alter
