Personal Narrative: What Confines Me

What defines us? Is it the thickness of our hair, the size of our nose, or the length of our legs? Is it how smart we are, how athletic, or how beautiful? Our popularity, how charismatic we are, or the number of likes we get on Instagram, does that define us? Is it the size of our heart, the supply of generosity we possess, or the amount of compassion we show for others that makes us distinct? Whether we are wheezing on the soccer field, praising God, or talking about cotton candy way past our bedtimes, the smiles I have shared with my friend define me. As I am running off the field after the final buzzer has sounded, the drops of rain, which have been continuously hitting my forehead for the duration of the game, seem to fade. My heart stops racing and my lungs calm as I reach my team, my cleats gliding over the white sideline. I see my team, my friend, and my coach, their smiles glistening with pride, with happiness. My own smile stretches across my face, allowing my pride in myself to finally overcome my insecurities. I feel my friend’s hand on my back, and we hug, her words praising my accomplishments. My smile gets bigger with each compliment, and I begin praising her efforts too, and she separates her lips and flashes her teeth. …show more content…

Our tongues contacting the sweet ice cream, we approach the giant cross overlooking the campfire. As we sit on the coarse, grainy, wood bench, our swaying movements merge together perfectly. The sweet music, drifting softly from the band of six-string acoustic instruments, wafts into our ears.
