Strong metaphors and vivid images, like the winter and snow motif, are potent representations for the loneliness, coldness, and emotional numbness brought on by trauma. The harsh realities and emotional distance connected with traumatic memories are embodied by the winter season and visions of snow, as stated in the quotation, "Winter was a country of ice and snow that encased the land like a hard shell" (Wagamese 13). Additionally, as the following remark illustrates, the symbolism of dreams and visions is essential in communicating the concept of trauma. "The residential school was in my dreams. Of children's cries and all innocent things' quiet" (Wagamese 157).

The poem, “The Skater of Ghost Lake” has an overall tone of eeriness and dark mystery brought upon by Benet’s use of figurative language through imagery, metaphors and similes within the stanzas. In the poem, the vivid imagery used to describe the setting of Ghost Lake leaves the reader with the sense of uneasiness and suspense. “Ice black as ebony, frostily scrolled; […] Steep stand the sentineled deep, dark firs” (Benet 254). The lake, as explained provides the setting, therefore creating the mood. Jeremy and Cecily who are here alone, seen through a third person point of view, are influenced by the author’s description of the intimidating wilderness.

Over the last couple of days in class we have discussed F. Scott Fitzgerald’s short story “Winter Dreams”. This short story explores several themes such as reality vs idealism and over expectations. These themes communicates through the use of various literary devices such as irony, symbolism, allegories and imagery. Through the use of these literary devices each character is brought to life and given its own type of personality. One quote that explores how the main character, Dexter, is given a unique personality states “The helpless ecstasy of losing himself in her charm was a powerful opiate rather than a tonic”.
“Winter Dreams” was published in 1926. Francis Scott Fitzgerald is most well-known for his novel “The Great Gatsby”. A common theme he is known for is the American dream and how it is corrupt. Many people are aware of the theory that money cannot buy happiness, but how many people really believe this? In the short story, “Winter Dreams”, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, Dexter Green and Judy Jones are utilized to address this concept. In “Winter Dreams”, the author acknowledges the unrealistic idealization of the American dream and through Dexter’s constant pining for Judy, underlines the perception that greed and obsession over material goods will inevitably lead to personal destruction; however, Fitzgerald most effectively presents the idea that money and success are not the epitome of personal happiness. In “Winter Dreams”, Fitzgerald utilizes Judy Jones to symbolize many peoples goal of succeeding through the American dream and to juxtapose
Literary Analysis of If on a Winter’s Night, a Traveler Chapter 2 of If on a Winter’s Night, a Traveler talks about the Reader’s reaction after finding out misprinted pages in the book that he is reading. In first two introductory paragraphs of chapter 2, the Reader’s lack of patience is developed by the author’s use of interplay through point of view, by hyperbole in the text, and by continuously evolving dictions and contrast of them, to show the Reader’s desire to read the complete book and bring back his pleasure of reading books. Calvino uses second person’s point of view to establish the relationship between the readers and the Reader. “You fling the book on the floor, you would hurl it out of the window, even out of the closed window, through the slats of the Venetian blinds.” Beginning from the first sentence of the chapter, the narrator uses the word “you” to convey the Reader’s actions and thoughts to the audience.
The book I choice to read was, “Brian’s Winter”, by Gary Paulsen. This book is about Brian after the private plane he was flying in crashes in to the rugged forests of Canada. Brian went through many struggles while trying the best he could to survive in the harsh environment. Some of the biggest events in this story include when he is attacked by a bear, during the major storms and some of his questionable encounters with the wolves. If I were telling a friend about the entire story in two minutes I would say, Brian’s parents were divorced leading him to visit his father for the first time in a long time.
Snow serves as a symbol of the love the couple once shared together. The narrator explains the night of the “big snow”, “Remember the night, out on the lawn, knee-deep in snow, chins pointed to the sky as the wind whirled down all that whiteness?” (108) which is a symbol of the climax of the love and happiness shared between the two lovers. However, the narrator uses the idea of snow once again, “just a few dots of white, no field of snow” (109) to contrast the previous image. The few dots of white symbolize the absence or dwindling of love and affection that was once shared in the house the narrator passes by.
