Introduction Personal philosophy on education: My personal philosophy about teaching and learning is that education is an individual and a unique experience for every student who enters the classroom. Teachers should understand the importance of mentoring and coaching students to attain their highest potential. Moreover, educators should consider teaching to be a lifestyle and not just a paycheck. Teachers should facilitate learning academically, personally and ethically. Educators should equip students with the correct tools necessary for success and, should have structured information about the subject being taught. According to Darden (2014), adults learn differently from children. For example, adults are independent in their learning and require minimum instructions. On the other hand, children need precise instructions and guidance in their learning. Adults are self -directed in their learning. Merriam (2014), states adults should have the following elements for learning to occur, such as the need to know, self-concept, experience, readiness, orientation, and motivation. These characteristics are essential for the adult learner who is returning back to school. According to Darden (2014), adults need to know why the information they are learning is relevant and what are the benefits and risks of not learning it. The second concept of Knowles’ model is self- concept. As an adult matures, they move from being dependent to independent and therefore are grounded in their self- image (Merriam, 2014, p. 51). Adults have a multitude of life experiences from which they draw new knowledge and skills. Therefore, learning should be associated with the student’s experience. The fourth concept is the readiness to learn. The adult readiness to learn is based on developmental task and social role. Therefore, information must be engaging, and contextualized to their immediate situation. The fifth concept is an orientation to learning. Adults need to know why they are learning something, and how the context of the information is relevant. If these elements are attained; the adult learner is motivated to learn (Merriam, 2014). Therefore, this theory resonates with my personal philosophy of teaching and learning because it is based on core principles that can be utilized in adult education. Furthermore, this researcher will integrate Knowles’ model in her teaching strategies to hold students responsible for their learning. Andragogy model of self-directed learning is used in every classroom in America to transform education and hold students accountable for their learning. Furthermore, andragogy model is based on the essential elements that adults must have for learning to occur.
