Personal Reflection In Group Therapy

As we progress through the classes, I feel as if our group session are becoming smoother and smoother. Since most of us have already facilitated, we were off to a slower start to find a facilitator. Once we did, I started the group by explaining my personal issue that I have been working on for several weeks already. I told them about the progress that I have been making with my own personal goal. We did that for every individual in our group. One group member stated how he was doing with his personal goal, then stated about a death in the family. Even though we touched on two different topics, I still felt that I touched on everything that had been going on in my life. I have been progressively working on my own personal goal and I let them know what steps I had been taking to achieve it. When we completely changed the subject from personal growth to death, I also had something to share because I have had a recent death in my family. It felt good to talk about it with others other than my family members. I felt as if this experience really let me feel what it is like to be in group therapy. It also amazed me how much I could relate to other members in my group. It was almost as if they were taking out the words out of my mouth. We also have a wide range of ages within our group. I thought this group was going to be a little difficult to work with became of the wide range of characters that were involved. Overall, it surprised me who much I could connect to them verbally. I feel that the trust has grown stronger, I am able to share a lot more things with them. The amount of emotion that was demonstrated during this last session really helped connect us as well. I felt that more of us let our guard down. It might have been became of the subject was just so personal. I was a little uncomfortable at first speaking about this subject, but I am glad that we did at the end.
