Many individuals reach a point in their life when they discover what it is they are meant to do. For me it was not defined by a simple moment but the accumulation of life experiences, which reinforced my calling to be a physician. Growing up as the oldest child of two first generation immigrants from differing backgrounds, I had a first hand view of the hardships of trying to establish ones self in a culturally different society. Unlike most as a youth I was afforded the opportunity to be immersed in the medical school experience through my father’s pursuit to become a doctor. Naturally this sparked my initial interest in the medical field, however my reasons to become a doctor have matured as I have.

Plato once stated “the greatest mistake in the treatment of disease is that there are physicians for the body and physicians for the soul, although the two cannot be separated”. The need for culturally competent doctors whom understand that truly treat a patient one must understand all avenues contributing to the ailment is drastic. I was immersed in many different cultures through my journey in life in through which understand cultural norms and know how to interact with people on a comfortable level. This will help me be able to build rapport and not only treat the diagnosis of the problem but also advise the patient on particle ways to help combat the issues while also taking into consideration cultural practices. My driving force behind my journey towards becoming a doctor is the fact that I was blessed with insight into many differing health disparities. The fact that they elicited a response towards action was not mere chance but because helping others through the gifts of medicine is part of my life’s imprint on this earth, in the minds and hearts of
