I knew I wanted to pursue a degree in Chemistry when I realised Chemistry is not just limited to pretty coloured precipitates and amazing reactions in the laboratory. I am fascinated to discover how Chemistry surrounds us daily, being the basis of numerous life processes, and I find it intriguing knowing everything around us is created through synthesis and reactions of numerous elements and compounds. I always aim to discover and develop my understanding further than my syllabus requires so I immerse myself in the subject by doing a lot of extra reading. After reading 'Mendeleyev's Dream: The Quest of The Elements' I became intrigued by the history of Chemistry, such as the discovery of the elements and how the periodic table was introduced. The work of the Greek philosophers in particular inspired me to approach Chemistry with a broader perspective in order to understand how current ideas in Chemistry came about. Organic Chemistry is one of my favourite areas within Chemistry, so I took advantage of an opportunity to participate in an Oxford University demonstration of using a mass spectrometer recently. Studying Biology has advanced my analytical skills, which has improved my research ability in Chemistry. In Biology I particularly enjoyed studying the topic of biological molecules where I could apply my knowledge of hydrocarbons and my ability to draw displayed formulae of the molecules. My EPQ is based on the impact of grapefruit on the body in conjunction with drugs. It has given me an opportunity to research in greater depth and focus on an area that I have often noticed but not yet
