Pharmacy is one of the most trusted professions in the medical field. Although it is a lengthy and rigorous journey to attain the title of Pharmacist, I have no doubt that I shall soon see the fruits of my labor. I came to this country four years ago, and during these past few years I have had many blessings and many challenges, including learning a new language. Through it all, I knew what I was working towards- a career as a healthcare professional. I grew up in Cuba with a strong sense of family togetherness, and family dinners consisted of loud discussions about the most interesting patient cases. During this time, I had many conversations with one uncle that I admire and who had already established himself as a pharmacist in this country. It was this uncle that showed me the true benefits of a pharmacy career versus a career in medicine. He explained to me his own love of pharmacy and how a pharmacist has many more opportunities to communicate with patients. While the pharmacy is open, a pharmacist is always available to listen to a patient’s concerns and establish a relationship with them, while a doctor must adhere to an appointment schedule, sometimes only seeing patients once a year. Working in a community pharmacy, such as CVS Pharmacy, I can envision a happy future, serving patients in this exciting environment. A position as a Pharmacy Manager in a retail setting would allow me to utilize all of the knowledge I will have acquired in school, while engaging with the public to hopefully better the health of my patients. After speaking with several pharmacists, I have learned of other routes I can take with my degree, and I would like to explore the possibility of research in pharmacy. My interests certainly lie in the mechanism of medications on the body, and research would afford me the opportunity to indulge that interest as well as hopefully work on something that benefits the human race. To be able to be part of a team that discovers a cancer-curing drug or improves the side effects of current medications would be the ultimate achievement. I am eager to learn more about all pharmacy has to offer in school in order to make an informed decision on the future of my
