For me, medicine was an effortless decision to make with respect to my future career. I have always been taught that a person will never work a day in their life if they love what they do. Medicine as an entity is rooted in science; growing up, that was where I felt the strongest in school. Subjects like biology and chemistry were scintillating and always aroused my curiosity. In addition to my academic interests that influenced my desire to pursue medicine, I have experienced the quintessential quest narrative that drives many people to embark on the journey of becoming a physician. When I was a child, my mother was diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a dreadful experience that opened my eyes to the value of medicine. I personally feel indebted to the field because I would not have her here today if it were not for modern medicine. …show more content…
In the past few years, I was a part of neurosurgical research at the Ohio State Wexner Medical Center where I felt emotionally satisfied in contributing to the science; incidentally, I was not a fan of research as it lacked human interaction, which further solidified my decision to become a physician. Volunteering at a local hospital proved to me that my premonition of the career path I would choose was accurate. I cannot overstate the emotional reward that I get in the aforementioned experiences and to have a life of full of instances like that seems ideal. I understand the profession is not necessarily always filled with joy, however, it provides a daily challenge. I need to be challenged, and the field of medicine is always changing as no case is the same.
