Public administration, specifically, nonprofit administration is an interesting field of study. I feel that nonprofit organizations represent the “heart” of a community. The reason these organizations do not succeed is not a lack of desire or commitment of its leaders, but due to the absence of knowledge and experience of how to operate this type of business. These leaders, whether they serve the local chapter of a national organization, just as I did in the beginning, or a local charity need a basic understanding of the concepts of administrating public programs and policies. Being approached by the Boy Scouts of America to serve in their professional ranks as a District Executive was something that I had never considered throughout my college years. My tenure as a professional with the Boy Scouts exposed me to the realities of operating a nonprofit business. Organizing fundraisers and membership drives, managing multiple event budgets, recruiting and coaching adult volunteers, and establishing business partner relationships, were just a few of my overall responsibilities. However, through initiative and resolve I succeeded in earning the National Quality District Award for my service area. These skills have not gone dormant, as I have since used them in other professional roles not only in the nonprofit sector but also in local government. In addition, my knowledge of program management has been utilized through my volunteer responsibilities in other nonprofit organizations both nationally and locally. My current position with Troy University enables me to promote education and scholastic achievement by interacting with various organizations and businesses. I believe that the knowledge I gain from this program will not only enhance my own professional competence but also allow me to educate and help professionals in the nonprofit community who want to further strengthen their public
