My interest in medicine first started when I was confronted with the harsh reality that millions of children die each year due to curable health conditions. My sophomore year of high school my church camp pastor was preaching a series on God’s calling for our lives, and one night he played a video that broke my heart over all of the suffering an injustice in this world. I was especially intrigued by how poor health care is in certain parts of the world, and I contemplated how I might make a difference one day by becoming a physician. As I considered this future career option, I realized it utilized my talents and gifts, and I decided to further research the field of medicine.

Over the course of my undergraduate career, I have gained confidence in my intellectual abilities, and I believe my academic record shows that I am capable of excelling in science intense courses. My most difficult semester was the spring semester of my sophomore year when I was enrolled in organic chemistry two, organic chemistry lab, and cell physiology. That semester I gained an understanding of the important concepts, but adapting to the demands of maintaining a large amount of information proved to be challenging. Being a devoted student and studying for many hours was required in order to memorize and truly learn the material. During that semester, I continued learning how to better manage my time as I balanced my course load of eighteen hours, family, friends, extracurricular activities, and my relationship with my fiancé. There were days when I felt overwhelmed and doubted my abilities to succeed as a pre-med and future medical school student, however, I continued to persevere because I was hopeful my hard work and determination would lead me to my dream of becoming a physician.
