Being a nurse is more than just a job. Nursing is a strategically chosen career path that God has led me to go down. Many motivations and influences on my life have led me to believe that I am called to be a nurse. Some of these influences include God, family members, and society. Being a nurse also lets me do things that I want to do in life, such as travel and show others God’s love. After lots of prayer and asking, God has showed me that I am meant to be a nurse, and His plans for my life are far greater than I can even comprehend. Growing up, I was raised in a Christian household. My mother taught me what was right and wrong, just like most people my age. Spreading the love of God is a prevalent goal when looking into the field of nursing. I want to show others that I love God, and that God loves the patient. Whether it be actions or words, I want to be the light in a patient’s life and possibly even lead them to Christ. A bible verse has inspired me greatly to show God’s love: “For I was sick and you looked after me” (Matthew 25:36 New International Version). God says that what you will not do for other people shows what you would not do for him: “He will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me’” (Matthew 25:45 New International Version). Nursing also is a gateway for me to travel. The travel nursing industry has grown significantly in the past decade: “At one time there were only 20 or 30 companies in the country, and now there are about 200” (Whitlow, 2003).
