I am Makenzie Wentling and I am a junior here at Eastern Michigan University in the nursing program. Being that I am in the nursing program, I see a lot of diversity and different cultures in my clinical experiences at hospitals. This definitely influences my attitude toward differences. I have become more understanding of other cultures. I have realized that everyone does things differently and that does not necessarily mean one way is better than the other. I enjoy learning about other’s cultures and finding out what is important to them. I first learned about the Power, Place and Image in Florence and Rome from attending an Honors College Star Lecture my freshman year. I graduated from high school as one of seventy students in my graduating class. Throughout my career, I will be taking care of many different individuals. This trip will allow me to learn how other people live in a different part of the world, and what things in life are important to them. This will allow me to be a more understanding and diverse nurse. Going on this trip with a large group of people will also prepare me for the type of atmosphere I will experience in the workplace as a nurse. Nursing is most definitely a team career. You know how the saying goes, “It takes a village.” Attending this study abroad program will teach me how to explore with others and how to work together to learn new things and come up with solutions to problems such as how to navigate in a part of the world that is completely new. This will help me to become a better team player, which will most definitely be applicable when I obtain a job as a nurse.
