You walk in the door, you see wheelchairs, walkers, and canes everywhere in a quiet lobby with seniors that are resting their eyes, chit chatting or just watching the world go by. This is what I experience every Friday, since the summer of 2015, at Alden of Waterford healthcare facility. This experience is where my passion has grown to become a nurse, and where I have decided to improve healthcare by trying to give individual and necessary resources to as many people as possible.
Since I have been attending this home, I have gained an abundance of knowledge about my self-concept. For instance, two weeks ago, there was a woman that was very anxious to be left alone due to a previous traumatic event. I was able to sit, and talk with her for two

This is one reason I would like to become a nurse practitioner. Recently, I went to see a nurse practitioner, and I thought it was amazing how she thoroughly listened to her patients, even more then some doctors. This is how I would like to improve health care in hospitals, nursing homes, and clinics. I think it is important to give patients individual time, especially as time with doctors continue to grow less and less. Once I attain my nursing degree, I would also like to go to some impoverished countries through the organization YWAM, or on the Mercy Ship, to help provide much needed medical care such as vaccines. I would also like to be involved in free clinics here in the United States. Recently, I watched a documentary about a free clinic in Kentucky that thousands of patients attend in one weekend to receive medical attention. This documentary inspired me to help the people in our own country. Finally, if I ever have the privilege of working in a nursing home, I would like to improve the quality of care to the best of my abilities. I know that many nursing homes lack essential care because of lack of resources, especially as the baby boom generation grows older. If I have the ability, I would like to help contribute making sure that all seniors have enough attention to feel comfortable at the end of their days.
