Personal Statement: A Career As An NFL Team

Since I was a child, I have always wanted to pursue something with sports. I was never athletic, though. I never saw myself playing professional sports but I always saw myself working with sports in my future. The area that has interested me is being a president of an NFL team. I always wanted to be behind the scenes being part of the organization that helps run the sports business side of the franchise. This has interested me because it’s something that isn’t sports but it still works with sports. Also, leadership is one of my strengths which I can use for being a president. Debbie Baratz wrote “In February 2012, Sports Business Daily conducted a salaries survey for professional sports teams (including the NFL) and found a wide range. For a VP in an NFL team, his salary will start at a median $230,000” (Baratz, 2013). Now VP stands for vice president which is also just behind the general manager. Baratz went on to write “typically makes a salary between $180,000 to $400,000” (Baratz, 2013). $400,000 are for the vice presidents who have been in the business for a while with one team for many years and has proven to have done a good job. Now Alex Dunlap stated “The VPs over the divisions or service lines that generate revenue are paid more than those who oversee support services. VPs over departments such as ticket sales, marketing, business development and corporate partnerships make more money than VPs who oversee groups like maintenance, environmental services, facilities or equipment” (Dunlap, 2013). Alex also agreed with the median around $230,000 and he stated, “At this level of seniority, the business operates just like most other businesses” (Dunlap, 2013). The higher up you get, the more business it is and the more it operates like a business. People generally stay in this business as long as they can. The goal is to work for your team and stay there until you retire. When I asked Jim Phelan how long he wants to stay with the New York Giants, he said “until the day I die. I love this team and I love this organization. I couldn’t see myself anywhere else.” (Phelan, 2016). Jim wants to stay with the New York Giants forever. He’s been with them his entire career and he sees himself nowhere else. After we laughed, he did say he wants to be with the New York Giants until he retires. Now obviously getting your dream team won’t always happen.
